Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz’s Emmys Reunion Had a Sharp Dig at the Cancelled ‘Buffy’ Reboot

Reunions between former co-stars have become one of the more reliable crowd-pleasers at any major awards show, especially when the show in question left as lasting a mark on pop culture as this one did. Fans tend to hold onto these pairings for years, hoping for even a brief glimpse of the old chemistry returning to a stage.

This year’s Emmy ceremony delivered exactly that kind of moment, bringing together two actors whose onscreen romance defined a generation of television for nearly a decade. Their appearance together marked the first time the pair had reunited publicly in nine years, and the timing lined up almost perfectly with a major anniversary for the show that made them both stars.

Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz took the stage together to present the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, which ultimately went to Matthew Rhys for ‘The Beast in Me.’ Before getting to the nominees, the two spent a moment reflecting on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ noting that this year marks roughly thirty years since the show first premiered back in 1997.

Boreanaz set up the bit by walking through the show’s premise with mock seriousness. “When you think about it, it is kind of crazy, right? A teenage girl chosen by fate to fight vampires, demons, the forces of darkness, and then she falls in love with a vampire with a soul, carrying around a couple 100 years of regret,” he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s coverage of the ceremony.

From there, Boreanaz leaned directly into the fan-favorite “Bangel” romance between their characters. “You know, Sarah, I always thought that Buffy and Angel would end up together,” he said, teeing up Gellar’s response. “Well, I guess we won’t find out!” Gellar replied, a line that took the audience a beat to fully register before landing with delayed laughs and applause.

The joke carried real weight beyond just nostalgia. Gellar had been attached to reprise her role as Buffy in a planned reboot series titled ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale,’ which was in development at Hulu following its 2025 announcement before being abruptly scrapped earlier this year. No further plans to continue the franchise have been announced since the cancellation.

Beyond the humor, Gellar and Boreanaz used their time on stage to acknowledge a difficult stretch for the show’s extended cast and crew. “David and I would like to acknowledge that it has been a tough two years for our beloved cast and crew, and we feel very lucky to have known and worked with such amazing people,” Gellar said, without naming names directly during the segment.

The tribute referenced the recent deaths of three former castmates. Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Buffy’s sister Dawn Summers, died in February 2025 at age 39, while Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris, died in March 2026 at age 54, and Anthony Head, who played Rupert Giles, died in June 2026 at age 72.

‘Buffy’ ran for seven seasons starting in 1997, with Boreanaz’s Angel character appearing throughout the first three seasons before spinning off into his own series, ‘Angel,’ which ran from 1999 to 2004. The original show earned fourteen Primetime Emmy nominations over its run, winning twice back in 1998 for makeup and music composition.

For longtime fans still holding out hope for more ‘Buffy’ content, the reunion offered a bittersweet mix of nostalgia and closure all at once.
