Scarlett Johansson Explains Why She Stands by Her Defense of Woody Allen: ‘It’s Important to Have Integrity’
Scarlett Johansson has spoken out about her support for filmmaker Woody Allen, a position that has stirred controversy in Hollywood.
Many actors and industry figures have distanced themselves from Allen due to s**** abuse allegations made by his stepdaughter, Dylan Farrow. These claims first emerged in 1992 and resurfaced during the #MeToo movement. Allen has consistently denied the accusations, and New York authorities investigated and dismissed them.
Johansson, who has worked with Allen on three films, Match Point, Scoop, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, is one of the few actors to publicly defend him. In a 2019 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she said, “I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work him anytime.”
In a new interview with The Daily Telegraph, Johansson discussed the possible backlash for supporting Allen.
She admitted it was “hard to know” if her stance had affected her career or personal life. “You never know what the domino effect is, exactly. But my mom always encouraged me to be myself, [to see] that it’s important to have integrity, and stand up for what you believe in,” she said.
Johansson also reflected on timing and speaking out publicly. “At the same time, I think it’s also important to know when it’s not your turn. I don’t mean that you should silence yourself. I mean sometimes it’s just not your time. And that’s something I’ve understood more as I’ve matured,” she added.
Defending Woody Allen is controversial because the allegations against him are serious and touch on broader conversations about accountability in Hollywood. Supporting him publicly can draw criticism from peers and the public, as it goes against the wave of actors distancing themselves from him in the wake of the #MeToo movement.
