Hayden Panettiere spent nearly her entire life in the public eye, rising from a child actor into one of television’s most recognizable faces through roles on ‘Heroes’ and ‘Nashville.’ Earlier this year, she took control of her own narrative for the first time, releasing a memoir that peeled back the polished image audiences had watched for decades, offering a far more complicated picture than the one presented in interviews and magazine covers over the years.

That book, ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning,’ arrived on May 19 through Grand Central Publishing, running 320 pages and covering some of the most difficult chapters of Panettiere’s life. According to the publisher, the memoir explores postpartum depression, addiction and recovery, trauma, domestic abuse, and loss, framed by Panettiere as a series of what she called “lifequakes” that forced her to rebuild her sense of self, chapter by chapter, on her own terms.

Panettiere wrote candidly about growing up as a child star under the management of her own mother, describing how that dynamic left her feeling more like a commodity than an artist, according to Rolling Stone. She detailed the pressure she faced over her weight and work ethic even as her career continued climbing, alongside the addiction and domestic abuse she experienced as an adult.

The memoir also included accounts of predatory behavior from powerful figures in the industry that Panettiere had kept private for years. According to Variety, one of the most discussed passages describes an incident when she was 18, when a friend led her into a room and told her to get into bed with a famous, unnamed male actor who was already undressed.

In a separate account detailed by the Irish Star, Panettiere also wrote about an Oscar-winning actor and director exposing himself to her at an industry party when she was 19. She did not publicly name either man in connection with these incidents, though she discussed the yacht cabin story further during an appearance on the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast, explaining that even though she felt capable of making safe decisions at that age, she wasn’t fully aware of everything happening around her at the time.

Beyond her professional experiences, Panettiere also opened up extensively about motherhood, detailing the postpartum depression she experienced after giving birth to her daughter, Kaya, in 2014 with former partner Wladimir Klitschko. She wrote about the heartbreaking decision to give up custody of her daughter in 2018, a choice she said stemmed directly from her struggles with depression and alcoholism at the time.

Panettiere also publicly came out as bisexual in an interview with Us Weekly ahead of the book’s release, adding another layer of candor to a press tour built around unusually personal disclosures for a celebrity memoir. Throughout her promotional appearances, she consistently framed the book as an attempt to reclaim ownership of a story that tabloids and outside narratives had long shaped without her input.

Following Panettiere’s death this past weekend at age 36, ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning’ returned to the top of bestseller charts, according to Rolling Stone. The book remains available in hardcover and audiobook formats, standing now as one of the most direct, unfiltered accounts Panettiere ever gave of her own life, delivered entirely on her own terms.

Our thoughts remain with Hayden Panettiere’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
