Sebastian Stan Is Being Deliberately Vague About His ‘The Batman Part 2’ Transformation, and Fans Are Reading Into Every Word

Sebastian Stan has spent the better part of two decades bouncing between blockbuster franchises, but his latest career pivot might be his most closely watched yet. After more than ten years as Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor is now stepping into Gotham City for Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman Part II.’

The casting news itself sent fans into a frenzy earlier this year, with speculation swirling for months over exactly who Stan would be playing opposite Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader. That mystery has since narrowed considerably, with multiple reports pointing to Stan taking on the role of Harvey Dent, Gotham’s district attorney and the tragic figure destined to become the villain Two-Face.

What hasn’t been fully nailed down, though, is how far that transformation will actually go on screen. Stan has stayed noticeably cagey when pressed on the subject, offering carefully worded answers that acknowledge the character’s dual nature without confirming specifics about makeup, prosthetics, or how much of Two-Face audiences will actually see in this installment.

That evasiveness fits a pattern. When Deadline previously asked Stan about the dramatic shift his role reportedly demands, he kept things vague, admitting only that he felt excited and a little nervous while trying to keep surprising himself throughout the process. It’s the kind of answer that confirms just enough to keep the rumor mill spinning without giving away anything concrete.

The speculation hasn’t been helped by conflicting reports about when, or if, Stan’s character actually crosses over into full Two-Face territory. Some outlets have suggested the transformation might not fully play out until a potential third installment, meaning ‘The Batman Part II’ could spend its runtime building toward Dent’s fall rather than showing the aftermath.

Adding another layer of intrigue, Stan reportedly referenced playing “many roles in this one” during separate comments about the project, a phrasing that lines up neatly with Dent’s signature split identity. Whether that means extensive prosthetic work along the lines of what transformed Colin Farrell into the Penguin for the first film, or something more restrained, remains unclear.

Stan is no stranger to physically demanding transformations, for what it’s worth. He’s undergone dramatic changes for roles before, from bulking up to play the Winter Soldier to disappearing into heavy facial prosthetics for the A24 drama ‘A Different Man.’ That track record has only fueled fan theories about just how far Mike Marino, the prosthetics designer behind Farrell’s Penguin makeup, might push things for Dent’s eventual scarring.

Beyond Stan, ‘The Batman Part II’ is shaping up to be a stacked ensemble effort. Pattinson returns as Batman alongside Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, and Andy Serkis reprising their roles, while Scarlett Johansson has also joined the cast, with speculation pointing toward her playing Dent’s wife, Gilda. Barry Keoghan is expected to return as the Joker as well, keeping the film tightly connected to the world Reeves built in 2022.

For now, fans will have to keep parsing every carefully hedged comment Stan gives for clues about what’s coming. Given how much secrecy Reeves has maintained around the project so far, that guessing game likely isn’t ending anytime soon.

‘The Batman Part II’ is set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027, giving audiences plenty of time to speculate before Stan’s transformation, whatever form it takes, finally makes it to the big screen.
