Sebastian Stan Just Pitched Marvel His Own Version of ‘Sicario,’ and It’s All About Bucky

For more than a decade, Sebastian Stan has been the guy standing just off to the side of the Avengers, quietly turning in some of the most acclaimed indie work in Hollywood between blockbuster paydays. He’s picked up an Oscar nomination, a Golden Globe, and a growing reputation as one of the more fearless character actors of his generation, even as fans mostly know him as Bucky Barnes.

That duality has defined his career for years now. He’s the guy who played a brainwashed Soviet assassin in one movie and Donald Trump in another, and somewhere in between all of that, he’s clearly been thinking hard about what a truly different kind of Bucky story could look like.

According to a profile published in New York Magazine, Stan revealed that he recently pitched a “Sicario-esque” Bucky Barnes movie directly to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. The concept, which Stan described as a half-joking suggestion, imagines a stripped-down, low-budget thriller that trades the franchise’s usual spectacle for something far more intimate.

“We keep a real small budget,” Stan said, describing the pitch, before laying out the premise. In his telling, the story follows a man who believes he recognizes someone from his past tied to the period when he was brainwashed, and who becomes fixated on tracking that person down.

“He goes on a whole journey to try to figure out who this person is,” Stan continued, framing the idea less as a superhero adventure and more as a paranoid character study. The comparison to ‘Sicario’, Denis Villeneuve’s tense 2015 cartel thriller, immediately signals a mood far removed from anything Marvel has attempted with the character before.

It’s an idea that leans directly into what has always made Bucky Barnes compelling in the first place. Ever since ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ introduced him as a mind-wiped assassin with fragmented memories, the character’s psychological damage has often felt underexplored beneath all the action set pieces.

‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ touched on his guilt and attempts at rehabilitation, but a full solo film built around his fractured identity has never materialized. Stan’s pitch suggests he’s still chewing on that unfinished business, even as Bucky’s future in the MCU heads toward much bigger, cosmic stakes.

That future currently includes ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, where Stan is expected to reprise the role alongside a sprawling ensemble cast. It’s a franchise trajectory that makes a quiet, “small budget” detective thriller feel like even more of a tonal outlier, which is likely part of why Stan flagged it as something he only half-seriously floated to Feige.

Still, the timing of the reveal has fans buzzing. Bucky Barnes has been part of the MCU since 2011’s ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, making him one of the franchise’s longest-running characters without ever headlining his own film, and that history has only fueled the appetite for something that finally centers him completely.

Whether Marvel would ever actually greenlight something this stripped-down remains an open question. The studio’s recent slate has leaned heavily into interconnected event filmmaking rather than smaller, character-driven detours, and Stan himself framed the pitch as more of a passing idea than a project in active development.

Even so, it’s easy to see why the concept has struck a nerve. A grounded, morally murky thriller starring one of the MCU’s most tortured characters, brought to life by an actor who has proven he can carry that kind of material, sounds like exactly the kind of creative swing longtime fans have been hoping for.

For now, it remains just that: a pitch, born out of an interview rather than an official announcement. But in an era where Marvel has shown increasing willingness to experiment with tone and format, it’s not the wildest idea in the world either.
