Selena Gomez recently opened up about why her voice has changed over the years. During an Instagram Live on Tuesday, a fan asked her about her vocals, and Gomez answered honestly.

“So sometimes when I’m on—never mind. There’s no excuse, I don’t really care. I think my point is, is that sometimes things happen. I get weird. My throat kind of swells inside sometimes. That’s all,” she said.

She also made it clear that she wasn’t upset by the question. “I’m glad y’all are being real with me on the Live. I appreciate it though, for real,” Gomez added.

This moment highlights her larger journey as an artist living in the public eye. Gomez has been performing since her first single in 2008 and continues to release music, including her latest album, I Said I Love You First, created with her husband Benny Blanco.

Over the years, she has shared her battle with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation in the body, including the throat. She first revealed her diagnosis in a 2015 interview with Billboard, saying, “I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy…I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”

Gomez has also talked about the side effects of lupus treatments, like weight changes, and the scrutiny she faced in the public eye. On Apple TV’s Dear… in 2023, she said, “My weight would constantly fluctuate because I would be on certain medications. And obviously, people just ran with it… It was like they couldn’t wait to find a thing to bring me down. I was being shamed for gaining weight because of my lupus.”

She has explained why she chooses to share her story openly. In a 2020 NPR interview, Gomez said, “The reason why I’ve become so vocal about the trials and tribulations of my life is because people were already going to narrate that for me. I wasn’t going to have a choice because of how fast everything moves now. And most of the time, yes, it’s not true, or it’s an embellished version of what the truth is. I want to be able to tell my story the way that I want to tell it.”
