Shailene Woodley Finally Reveals Why Her Mary Jane Was Cut from ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′

Superhero franchises are littered with abandoned plans, but few stories feel as quietly poignant as the actors who came close to a major comic book role only to see it vanish before release. That was the reality for Shailene Woodley more than a decade ago, when her turn as one of Spider-Man’s most iconic love interests never made it past the editing room floor.

Woodley was riding high off breakout roles in projects that would later define her career trajectory when she landed the part of Mary Jane Watson opposite Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ The casting made sense on paper, following Sam Raimi’s original trilogy where Kirsten Dunst had memorably played the character, while director Marc Webb’s rebooted franchise had instead centered Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy as Peter’s primary love interest.

Now, more than a decade after the film’s release, Woodley is finally opening up about exactly why her scenes never made the final cut. Speaking with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation for a career retrospective, Woodley explained that filmmakers wanted to save Mary Jane’s introduction for after Gwen Stacy’s death within the franchise’s larger story. She recalled being told, “They were like, ‘We’ve introduced a lot of new characters in this last one…’ ‘Let’s wait for [Gwen] to die, and then we’ll introduce Mary Jane,’ which made sense. But then they didn’t make [TASM3].”

That explanation lines up with what director Marc Webb has said publicly over the years about the decision. Woodley had filmed only a handful of scenes opposite Garfield, reportedly working just a few days on set, before Webb ultimately decided the film needed to stay tightly focused on Peter and Gwen’s relationship rather than introducing a new romantic thread too early.

The plan, according to reporting at the time, was always for Mary Jane to properly enter the story in a planned third ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ film, giving her arc room to breathe once Gwen’s storyline had run its course. Unfortunately for both Woodley and fans of the character, that third installment never happened, effectively ending Mary Jane’s presence in the franchise before it ever truly began.

Woodley’s comments finally offer closure on a plan that had largely existed as industry speculation for over ten years, confirming that the sequencing decision wasn’t personal but rather a structural choice tied to the franchise’s broader, ultimately unrealized roadmap. It’s a reminder of just how many pieces have to align for a multi-film superhero plan to actually pay off, and how quickly those plans can collapse when a franchise loses momentum.

The timing adds an extra layer of what-if to the story given how differently things eventually played out for Garfield’s version of Peter Parker. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ later brought Garfield’s Spider-Man back into the multiversal spotlight, complete with a nod to the fact that his version of Peter had never quite found time for a proper relationship, a detail that only makes Woodley’s cut storyline feel like even more of a missed opportunity in hindsight.

With Woodley having since built an entirely different career path through prestige television and acclaimed dramas, her brief brush with the Spider-Man franchise remains one of those genuine Hollywood curiosities, a role fans got just enough of a glimpse of to wonder what could have been.
