Shania Twain Reveals Why She Changed Her Famous Brad Pitt Lyric — and His Response
Shania Twain has been entertaining fans for decades with her catchy country-pop hits, and one of her most famous songs, “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” has a little Hollywood twist in its lyrics.
The song, released in 1997, originally included a line about Brad Pitt: “OK, so you’re Brad Pitt / That don’t impress me much.” Twain recently surprised fans by changing the lyric to name Ryan Reynolds instead.
She made the switch during her performance at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, where she also received the Music Icon Award. Reynolds looked both surprised and flattered when the camera focused on him as she sang.
So how did Brad Pitt react to being replaced, even temporarily? In an interview with The Movie Dweeb’s Daniel Merrifield, Pitt said he didn’t mind at all.
“He didn’t steal. I think we can share the wealth there,” he said. He even praised Reynolds, adding, “Ryan’s a good egg, too. He deserves some love.” Pitt jokingly suggested that Twain could pass the lyric along to other stars in the future. “I think they ought to pass it on down, and next time she ought to sing it to Austin Butler. Maybe Leo [DiCaprio] in between and then Austin Butler,” he said.
Twain explained how Brad Pitt’s name ended up in her song in the first place during an interview with Spotify HQ, as reported by Billboard. She said, “I remember I had a girlfriend visiting me, and it was near Christmas, and we were baking cookies. I was writing this album, and there was a scandal of [Pitt] and Gwyneth [Paltrow] where there was naked photos of him. And this was like all the rage. I just thought, ‘I don’t know what all the fuss is about.’ I’m like, well, that don’t impress me much, I mean what is all the fuss.”
Twain made sure to clarify that she wasn’t trying to pick on Pitt, but was just commenting on the media frenzy over the photos.
Personally, it’s fun to see how a single lyric can connect pop culture, music, and Hollywood all in one. Shania Twain’s creativity and sense of humor show why her songs are still so memorable decades later. What do you think about her swapping Brad Pitt for Ryan Reynolds in the song?
