Simu Liu Reveals Robert Downey Jr.’s ‘Downey Land’ Trailer Village Came With Personal Chefs on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Set
Robert Downey Jr. made a big impression on the set of Avengers: Doomsday, and not just because of his return to Marvel.
According to Simu Liu, the Oscar winner had his own large trailer area during filming, which the cast jokingly named “Downey Land.”
Liu shared the details in an interview with Collider. He said Downey’s setup included several trailers grouped together in one spot at the base camp. The space was known for its creative look and high level of comfort. Liu said he was surprised the first time he was invited inside and noticed the artwork and overall vibe of the area.
“Downey famously has this convoy of trailers and this whole area in base camp that we affectionately called Downey Land,” Liu told Collider. He added that the space even had its own chefs. When Liu showed up with his regular set lunch, he was quickly told that wasn’t needed. “Oh, no, no, no. We don’t do that here,” Downey told him, according to Liu. A full buffet was already prepared.
Liu said the moment felt unreal. He looked around and couldn’t believe who he was sharing a meal with.
The cast of Avengers: Doomsday is packed with big names. Along with Liu and Downey, the movie includes Marvel regulars like Chris Hemsworth, Florence Pugh, and Tom Hiddleston. It also brings back actors from the X-Men films, including Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, plus newer faces like Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby.
Downey is returning to the Marvel world as Doctor Doom, not Iron Man. That switch has drawn a lot of attention to the film, which is set to hit theaters on December 18 through Disney.
Despite being surrounded by stars, Liu said he had to stay focused. “I have a job to do,” he explained to Collider. “The worst thing I can do is be a fan. I’m not a fan. I’m a coworker.” He admitted it was hard at times, but he pushed himself to see everyone on set as equals.
