‘Smallville’ Star Tom Welling’s (49) Accidental NSFW ‘Hello, NYCC’ Instagram Story Has Fans Doing a Double Take
Comic con weekends are supposed to be about panels, signings and nostalgia, but every so often the internet hands a convention an unplanned storyline. This year, Tom Welling’s Instagram story became that storyline.
The actor was in New York for one of the most anticipated reunions on the schedule, a celebration of a show that defined a generation of superhero television. Nobody expected the buzz to start in a hotel room.
Welling was in town for a ‘Smallville’ cast reunion at New York Comic Con, timed just ahead of the series’ 25th anniversary on October 16. The show premiered on The WB, ran for 10 seasons and ended on The CW in 2011, following Clark Kent before he became Superman.
The convention panel, titled ‘The Road to Superman: 25 Years of Smallville’, was held at the Javits Center on October 10. It brought together Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, Kristin Kreuk, Erica Durance and producer Julie Snyder.
The trouble started a day earlier. On Friday, the 49-year-old actor posted a photo of his hotel room view to his Instagram Stories, captioned “Hello, NYCC”, a friendly greeting to the convention.
The skyline wasn’t the only thing in the frame. His reflection was visible in the hotel window glass, and it showed he wasn’t dressed.
The story reportedly stayed up for at least 10 hours before it was deleted. By then, screenshots had spread across social media, and the image had racked up huge numbers of views.

Reaction online was swift and a little cheeky. One fan joked that Welling needs a PR agent, questioning how he missed the reflection before posting.
Others leaned into the Clark Kent comparisons, with one outlet quipping that it was not very Clark Kent of him. The moment fit neatly into the show’s history of mild-mannered secrets and accidental reveals.
Welling himself appeared unbothered at the convention. He spent time with his former castmates on stage, and he later shared a video of himself signing photos and comics from the show, inviting fans to come meet him.
On Saturday, Welling also got fans laughing with a behind-the-scenes story. He recalled that his co-star John Glover once came into his makeup trailer with a big smile, holding a fan-made nude image of Welling and asking if it was real. Welling said he signed it for him.
The anecdote landed differently given the weekend’s viral moment, and the crowd clearly enjoyed the timing. Rosenbaum also posted a clip from the panel to his own Instagram, showing the cast smiling while cheering fans filled the room behind them.
For longtime fans, the reunion was the real news. Seeing Clark, Lex, Lana and Lois together again reminded everyone how strongly the series still resonates.
The anniversary party doesn’t stop at the Javits Center. The annual Salute to Smallville convention in Nashville will mark the 25th anniversary in November, with creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar among the guests.
That event is expected to bring many members of the cast back together again. Between the convention circuit and the anniversary itself, the celebration is shaping up to last well beyond one weekend.
If there is a moral here, it is a simple one: check the window before you post. Hotel glass makes a surprisingly good mirror, especially when the sun is setting over a skyline.
Still, the incident hasn’t dimmed the enthusiasm around the reunion. If anything, it kept the cast of ‘Smallville’ trending for another few days, and fans are happy to keep talking.
Did Tom Welling’s viral Instagram story steal the spotlight from the Smallville reunion?
