Fans of James Bond finally got a first look at gameplay for the upcoming video game 007: First Light, developed and published by IO Interactive.

The game offers an origin story for the world’s most famous spy, showing a younger, less experienced James Bond as he takes on a key mission to earn his 00 status. The game stars Patrick Gibson as Bond, who is depicted as a 26-year-old MI6 agent navigating his early days in the organization.

The story draws inspiration from the original Ian Fleming novels and short stories, as well as the long-running James Bond films. Classic characters like M, Q, and Miss Moneypenny are also included in the game, but they have been reimagined to show how they influence Bond’s early career.

According to IO Interactive, this version of Bond is designed to give players a new take on the character that they can grow with over time.

The James Bond video game series has been on a long hiatus since Activision lost its non-exclusive license following 2012’s 007 Legends. IO Interactive first announced plans for a new Bond game in November 2020, and full production began after the release of Hitman 3 in 2021. The game was fully revealed in June 2025, with gameplay now being shown to the public for the first time.

IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak told IGN that the company hopes 007: First Light could be the start of a trilogy of Bond games. “We wanted to create a new, younger James Bond that players can call their own and grow with,” he said. Abrak also compared the vision for the series to the studio’s Hitman: World of Assassination trilogy, which followed a continuous story over multiple games.

The game is set to release on March 27, 2026, and will be available on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. Early previews of the gameplay show a mix of stealth, action, and espionage elements that highlight Bond’s skill set as a rookie agent. Fans are already speculating about how the game will balance narrative storytelling with action, and how it might influence future Bond video game projects.

Overall, 007: First Light looks set to bring a fresh perspective to the James Bond universe for gamers. The first look at the gameplay suggests an exciting mix of adventure and strategy, offering both longtime fans and new players a chance to step into the shoes of a young secret agent.
