Snoop Dogg’s R-Rated Biopic Just Landed a Release Date, and It’s Going Head to Head With The Bluey Movie

Music biopics have quietly become one of Hollywood’s most reliable box office genres, and Universal has positioned itself as the studio leading that charge. Fresh off the massive success of a certain Michael Jackson biopic that recently crossed the billion-dollar mark worldwide, the studio is wasting no time lining up its next major artist-driven project.

That momentum has clearly influenced how quickly Universal is moving forward with one of its longest gestating passion projects. First announced back in 2022, the film has spent years quietly developing behind the scenes before finally locking in a concrete path to theaters.

Universal Pictures has officially set August 6, 2027 as the release date for ‘Snoop,’ its upcoming R-rated biopic chronicling the life of rap icon Snoop Dogg. The film will open that same weekend alongside Disney’s ‘The Bluey Movie’ and Black Bear’s ‘Jason Statham Stole My Bike,’ setting up an unusually varied box office showdown for the following summer.

Craig Brewer, known for directing ‘Hustle & Flow’ and ‘Song Sung Blue,’ is set to helm the project based on his own rewrite of an original script by Joe Robert Cole. ‘Outer Banks’ star Jonathan Daviss has been cast in the titular role, taking on the challenge of portraying one of hip hop’s most recognizable figures.

Snoop Dogg himself has spoken candidly about the film’s tone, making clear from the start that audiences should expect an unfiltered look at his story. Speaking at CinemaCon earlier this year, the rapper told the crowd that following his fellow N.W.A. collaborators telling their story through Straight Outta Compton, it was now his turn to bring his own journey to the screen.

The project marks the first film produced under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment, giving Snoop Dogg significant creative investment in how his own story gets told on screen. Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer joins Snoop Dogg and Death Row Pictures President Sara Ramaker as producers on the film.

The biopic will trace Snoop’s rise from his West Coast origins through the release of his landmark 1993 debut album Doggystyle, following his path to becoming a 17-time Grammy nominated artist working alongside producer Dr. Dre. The film will also incorporate music pulled from across Snoop’s extensive catalog of hits.

Universal has established a strong track record with music biopics in recent years, a pattern this release date only reinforces. The studio’s 2015 film ‘Straight Outta Compton’ earned over $200 million worldwide and picked up an Oscar nomination, while 2002’s ‘8 Mile’ brought in nearly $243 million globally, giving Universal plenty of precedent for turning hip hop stories into box office success.

‘Snoop’ takes the release slot previously held by an untitled Universal event film, signaling just how confident the studio is in the project’s commercial potential. Given the massive success of Universal’s Michael Jackson biopic just months earlier, the timing could not be better for another major music icon’s life story to hit theaters.

With production expected to begin sometime this summer and a firm release date now locked in for August 2027, fans of Snoop Dogg and hip hop history alike have a lot to look forward to. Whether the film can match the box office heights of Universal’s recent biopic hits remains to be seen, but the pieces are clearly in place for another major success story.
