The search for DCU’s next Batman is still one of the biggest mysteries in Hollywood. Even as James Gunn and Peter Safran push forward with the new slate of DC Universe projects, fans are still guessing who will take up the cape and cowl.

Names like Alan Ritchson and Jensen Ackles have been floated, but Ritchson recently confirmed that although he had discussions with Gunn, it doesn’t seem like he’ll be playing the Dark Knight.

Recently, speculation has shifted to Aaron Taylor-Johnson after fan account Everything_DCU on X noticed that Gunn began following the actor on Instagram.

This sparked a wave of rumors suggesting that Johnson might be the one to step into Batman’s shoes. Johnson isn’t new to superhero roles, he played Pietro Maximoff, also known as Quicksilver, in the MCU, and later took on the villainous role of Kraven the Hunter in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

While the Kraven movie struggled at the box office, Johnson’s performance earned some praise. He also has several projects lined up in the coming months, including roles in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Werwulf, and Blood on Snow.

James Gunn recently addressed the ongoing search for Batman in an interview with The Ringer-Verse. He didn’t confirm any names but said that multiple actors are being considered. “Do I have ideas about actors to play Batman? Absolutely, I do. I have guys I like. I have guys that are at the top of the list, just like I had people that were at the top of the list for Superman,” he explained.

Gunn also cautioned that casting will be a careful process. “We’d have to screen test, we’d have to do the whole thing. It’s unlikely that I’m going to hire someone that’s [like] Sylvester Stallone as Batman [where] we’re just hiring him. It’s unlikely that Batman’s going to be one of those guys.” He added, “But it’s possible! I know one actor in particular who’s a pretty big star that wants to be Batman. We’ve talked about it, but I’m not sure that’s the case.”

On the script, Gunn confirmed that it’s still being written. “The script isn’t done, I mean, we’ve got somebody writing a script, I think it’s really good. But it isn’t finished yet,” he said.

It looks like fans will have to wait a bit longer for official confirmation on the new Batman. Aaron Taylor-Johnson seems like a strong candidate, but nothing is set in stone yet.

Johnson could bring a fresh, intense energy to the role, especially after his performances as both hero and villain in previous superhero projects. What do you think? Could Aaron Taylor-Johnson be the next Batman? Share your thoughts in the comments.
