Sonic the Hedgehog Races Chuck in a Surprising ‘Angry Birds 3’ Trailer

Video game movies have spent the last few years proving that mascots can be box office royalty, and the pairing of Sonic the Hedgehog with ‘The Angry Birds Movie 3′ feels like the logical next step in that story. Two of gaming’s most recognizable characters now sit under the same corporate roof, which makes a crossover less outlandish than it first sounds.

The reasons are practical. Sega acquired Rovio and ‘Angry Birds’ in 2023, and it has partnered with Paramount on the live-action ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ films. Paramount then took the third ‘Angry Birds’ film over from Sony Pictures, the studio that released the first two.

That background makes a new image easy to understand. It shows Sonic sprinting through a blurred jungle-like landscape with Chuck right beside him, the yellow bird glancing over with a grin as the two race. It is being presented as a first look at Sonic in ‘The Angry Birds Movie 3’, and the film’s December 23 release date is attached to it.

The pairing is a natural fit on paper. The film’s official site describes Chuck as the speedster of the island, a bird whose thinking, talking and moving are all fast. A race against the world’s most famous blue blur is exactly the kind of gag that character was built for.

One caution is needed. I could not find a confirmation from Paramount, Sega or Rovio that Sonic appears in the film itself, so it is unclear whether the image comes from the movie, a promotion or a game tie-in. Until the studio says more, it is best read as a tantalizing hint, not a confirmed cameo.

Fans of both franchises will remember that this is not their first meeting. Sonic and Dr. Eggman previously arrived on Piggy Island in a special Sonic Dash event in the mobile game ‘Angry Birds Epic’. A separate crossover spanned games including ‘Angry Birds Friends’, ‘Angry Birds 2’ and ‘Sonic Forces’, putting Sonic alongside Red.

The corporate link also runs through the film’s crew. Toru Nakahara, who is tied to the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ franchise, is an executive producer on the new ‘Angry Birds’ movie. The film is directed by John Rice from a screenplay by Thurop Van Orman.

The story centers on Red, the franchise’s famously short-tempered leader, who faces what the official synopsis calls his greatest challenge yet: surviving fatherhood while saving the world. Jason Sudeikis returns as Red, with Josh Gad as Chuck, Rachel Bloom as Silver and Danny McBride as Bomb.

New family members include Emma Myers as the teenage daughter June, Walker Scobell as a teenage son and Psalm West as the hatchling Olly. ‘Saturday Night Live’ alum James Austin Johnson voices the family’s pet spider, Fuzzy. YouTube stars MrBeast and Salish Matter have also joined the cast, while Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox of Smosh are set to reprise their roles.

The franchise has a lot to prove after a long gap. TheWrap reported that the first film grossed $352 million worldwide, while the 2019 sequel did not fly nearly as high at $152.2 million, though Paramount insiders pointed to strong streaming viewership over the past five years.

Sonic, meanwhile, is a proven draw. ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ grossed $491 million worldwide, and a fourth film is on Paramount’s slate for spring. That success is part of why a link between the two properties is so tempting.

The release date has also changed. The film was originally set for January 29, 2027 before moving up to December 23, 2026, a holiday slot that puts it in a crowded field following ‘Dune 3’, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and Robert Eggers’ ‘Werewulf’.

An official trailer for the film is already out, and the holiday release date is still weeks away. Whether Sonic turns out to be a short cameo, a bigger role or something tied to marketing is a question only the studio can answer.

For now, the image has people talking. A bird and a hedgehog racing each other is a simple, funny idea, and it keeps attention on a film that opens in a busy window.
