The series follows Kihachi Sakamoto, a young man hardened after losing his brother Seiroku, who once dreamed with him of ushering in an Age of Electricity in a Kyoto still ruled by steam power. Early episodes show Kihachi witnessing the wonders of electricity with Seiroku, and then, four years later, alone and cynical, meeting a girl deep in prayer, before Yosuke storms into Kihachi’s workshop and demands the Catalog along with his fiancee, raising the question of why Inako has it in the first place.
Later chapters show Yosuke clashing with Kihachi in a haze of denial, while Inako’s sharp senses reveal a secret that inspires Kihachi to recreate one of his old inventions. That tension between Kihachi’s grief, Yosuke’s suspicion and Inako’s quiet resolve has become the emotional engine driving the show into its back half, and episode 7 looks poised to push that triangle even further.

During the scriptwriting process, the staff decided to set the world in an alternate timeline where electricity barely developed and technology stayed steam based, in order to make the electrical gadgets and Kihachi’s creativity more compelling, and they didn’t focus on strict historical accuracy when depicting early 1900s Kyoto since they wanted to present a what if narrative.
Critics have responded warmly to the results so far. One review described the novel’s plot as intricately structured and gratifying, while praising animation that dips into various styles including impressionism and invites viewers into an awe inspiring alternative world, while another called it a series with a lot of promise that fans of high quality animation, original storytelling and memorable characters are likely to enjoy.
