‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Casting Detail Has Fans Doing a Double Take Over One Wild Age Gap

Casting choices in blockbuster films rarely get more attention than the actors playing the lead heroes and villains, but every so often a smaller detail slips through that ends up generating its own wave of online chatter. That’s exactly what’s happened with one particular family dynamic tucked inside ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’

The film has spent its opening days dominating headlines for its record-breaking box office run, but fans digging through the credits and flashback sequences have zeroed in on something considerably more granular: the age gap between two actresses playing sisters on screen. What started as a passing observation has since turned into a genuinely surprised reaction across social media.

The detail centers on Sadie Sink and Olivia Booth-Ford, who play Jean Grey and her older sister Sara Grey, respectively. Despite Sara being written as the older sibling in the story, Booth-Ford is actually only 16 years old, while Sink, who plays the younger Jean, is 24, an eight-year real-life age gap running in the opposite direction of the characters’ fictional birth order.

That flashback sequence carries real emotional weight within the film itself. Jean and Sara are revealed to have lived together after their mother abandoned them once their mutant powers emerged, with Sara also possessing telepathic abilities of her own. Their lives change forever when the Department of Damage Control captures Sara, claiming she’s being held for study and observation, though she’s actually subjected to brutal experiments that ultimately shape much of Jean’s arc throughout the film.

Sara Grey isn’t a wholly new addition to Marvel Comics, either, though she’s remained a relatively obscure figure historically. The character was first introduced in 1966 as Jean’s older sister but didn’t actually appear on the page until 1980’s X-Men #136 during the Dark Phoenix Saga, when Jean revealed her mutant identity to her family.

Interestingly, casting rumors leading up to the film’s release had initially pointed in a completely different direction regarding family casting. Early reports had suggested Sink’s own younger sister, Jacey Sink, who has previously played younger versions of Sadie’s characters in both ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘The Whale,’ might appear in ‘Brand New Day’ as a young version of Jean. That specific rumor was later walked back by the same insider, who clarified that while a Grey sister character was indeed in the film, she’d be played by Booth-Ford rather than Sink’s real-life sibling.

Sink’s identity as Jean Grey itself had been one of the worst-kept secrets of the entire promotional cycle, with the actress dodging questions throughout press interviews before the film finally confirmed her role outright, dropping any secondary alias or misdirection once audiences saw her in theaters. Her version of the character is expected to return in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ before eventually anchoring Marvel’s upcoming ‘X-Men’ film.

For now, the surprising real-life age gap between Sink and Booth-Ford has simply become one more small detail fans are dissecting as they process everything ‘Brand New Day’ packed into its runtime. It’s a reminder that even in a film built around record-breaking box office numbers and major mutant reveals, sometimes the smallest casting quirks are what stick with audiences the most.
