‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Director Destin Daniel Cretton Finally Breaks Silence on Leaving ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’
Destin Daniel Cretton has finally opened up about his decision to leave Marvel’s ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,’ explaining that the choice was not caused by problems behind the scenes but came down to finding the right creative connection with the story.
The filmmaker was originally set to direct the fifth Avengers movie before the project went through major changes and eventually became ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Instead, Cretton moved on to direct ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ taking over a project that needed a clear creative direction after the events of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’
During interviews connected to the promotion of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ Cretton and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige discussed the reason behind the unexpected change. According to Cretton, leaving the Avengers project was a personal creative decision rather than a disagreement with Marvel.
Cretton explained that he needs a strong emotional connection to every project he directs and that simply being attached to a massive franchise is not enough for him.
“I don’t do any movie just to do the movie,” Cretton said. “Until I find an intimate, personal connection to the material, I don’t feel like I could do a good job. A major franchise assignment alone isn’t enough to commit.”
The director admitted that an Avengers film comes with huge opportunities and an exciting scale, but his strongest interest has always been stories focused on individual characters and their personal struggles. That creative approach became especially important when he began working on ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’
Before joining the Spider-Man project, Cretton had already been involved with Marvel through ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ and the upcoming Disney+ series ‘Wonder Man.’ While working on ‘Wonder Man,’ he eventually met with Marvel and Sony executives to discuss the future of the Spider-Man franchise.
According to producer Amy Pascal, the fourth Spider-Man movie was struggling to find a clear path forward before Cretton joined the team. She explained that the film had many different ideas being considered and that the studio believed Cretton was the right person to bring everything together.
Pascal said the team “begged and begged and begged” Cretton to take over the project because of his ability to combine large action sequences with emotional storytelling.
Tom Holland also praised the director’s involvement during the film’s New York press event. The Spider-Man actor explained that Cretton arrived at a difficult moment and helped the team understand what the movie needed to be about.
“When he came in, it was a scary time, and he saved us,” Holland said. “Destin was able to come in and focus us all on one idea: what is life like for a young person who is completely alone? He gave us our captain when we needed it most.”

While Cretton stepped away from ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,’ he has not completely left Marvel behind. The director recently confirmed that ‘Shang-Chi 2’ is still moving forward, with discussions about the script continuing.
There are also reports that Cretton could have a major future role in Spider-Man’s world beyond ‘Brand New Day,’ including possibly helping introduce Miles Morales into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
For now, Cretton’s focus remains on Peter Parker’s next chapter and creating a more personal Spider-Man story. His exit from the Avengers project shows that even within a massive franchise like Marvel, directors still have to find a story that connects with them on a deeper level.
