‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is About to Break a Box Office Record That’s Stood for over a Decade

Box office records don’t fall this fast very often, but Tom Holland’s latest outing as the wall-crawler has spent its entire theatrical run treating milestones like speed bumps rather than finish lines. What started as an already-massive opening weekend has turned into one of the most sustained record-breaking runs the industry has seen in years.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ opened July 31 by shattering ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ all-time domestic opening record with $360 million, and the film hasn’t slowed down much since. It went on to deliver the highest-grossing first week in domestic box office history and became the second-fastest film ever to reach $1 billion globally, trailing only ‘Endgame’ itself.

That relentless pace has now put the film within reach of one of cinema’s most stubborn records. ‘Brand New Day’ just crossed $896.4 million domestically after grossing a spectacular $2.7 million on its fifth Tuesday discount day, putting it on track to cross $900 million on Thursday and become just the second film in history to reach that milestone, trailing only 2015’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’

The speed at which ‘Brand New Day’ has climbed the charts is what makes this record chase particularly remarkable. ‘The Force Awakens’ took 50 days to cross $900 million domestically, a mark that had stood untouched for over a decade. Tracking suggests ‘Brand New Day’ could clear that same threshold in under 40 days, shaving more than 10 days off a record that no other film had come remotely close to challenging.

That pace has held up even during typically slower midweek stretches, a period where most blockbusters see their earnings taper off significantly. The film’s fifth Tuesday discount day gross represented only a 45.9% drop from the previous Tuesday, a notably softer decline compared to ‘Endgame’s’ 35.6% drop at the same point in its own run, though ‘Endgame’ was tracking from a smaller weekly base overall.

‘Brand New Day’ has already overtaken ‘Endgame’s’ lifetime domestic total of $858.3 million to claim the number two spot on the all-time North American chart, with only ‘The Force Awakens’ and its $936.6 million total now standing between the Spider-Man sequel and the top position.

Industry projections currently estimate ‘Brand New Day’ could ultimately land somewhere between $950 million and $960 million domestically, a range that would officially dethrone ‘The Force Awakens’ as the highest-grossing film of all time in the United States, a record that franchise has held for more than a decade. Reaching $900 million by Thursday would make ‘Brand New Day’ only the second film ever to cross that threshold domestically, doing so in a fraction of the time it took the previous record holder.

With Labor Day weekend traffic still ahead to potentially add further momentum, the film’s trajectory suggests this record chase isn’t close to finished. Between its record-setting opening, its historic pace to $800 million, and now its push toward $900 million, ‘Brand New Day’ has spent nearly every week of its release rewriting some part of the domestic box office record book.
