‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is About to Crack the All-Time Top Five at the Domestic Box Office

Superhero movies rarely stay dominant this deep into their theatrical runs, but Tom Holland’s latest outing as Spider-Man is proving to be the exception. Sony’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has spent two weeks demolishing box office records at a pace that’s made it the fastest-moving blockbuster of the year.

The film opened on July 31 with the biggest domestic debut ever recorded, and it hasn’t slowed down since. Its staying power has become just as notable as its opening weekend numbers, with each new milestone arriving faster than industry analysts initially projected.

That momentum is now setting up one of the biggest box office stories of the summer. ‘Brand New Day’ is on track to pass ‘Top Gun: Maverick’s’ $718 million domestic run and officially crack the top five highest-grossing films of all time in North America, a list that has remained largely untouched for years.

The film pulled in an estimated $11.3 million on its second Thursday in theaters, a drop of just 59.2% from the previous Thursday. That kind of hold stands out sharply against comparable Marvel releases, with 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ dropping 65.1% at the same point and 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ falling 49.1%.

That steady performance has pushed the film’s domestic total to $715.9 million after just fourteen days in theaters, putting it nearly $57 million ahead of where ‘Endgame’ stood at the same point in its own run, despite ‘Brand New Day’ having started just $3 million ahead of it. According to Deadline, the film’s current domestic haul already ranks sixth all-time, running 31% ahead of Spider-Man: No Way Home’s pace at the same point, a film that ultimately finished its domestic run at $804.7 million.

Passing ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ would push ‘Brand New Day’ into the top five highest-grossing domestic releases ever, joining an exclusive group that currently includes ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ and ‘Avatar.’ Industry estimates now suggest the film could cross $800 million domestically by next Tuesday at the latest, depending on how well it holds through the coming weekend.

With ‘Brand New Day’ already running roughly $50 million ahead of ‘Endgame’s’ pace at the same point in their respective runs, expectations for where the film ultimately lands keep climbing. Current projections point to a possible $900 million domestic run as something close to a locked-in floor for the film’s total.

More ambitious estimates put the film’s final domestic total somewhere between $910 million and $960 million, a range that would make it just the second film in history to cross the $900 million mark domestically. That kind of finish would also put ‘Brand New Day’ within realistic striking distance of ‘The Force Awakens,’ whose eleven-year-old domestic record of $936.6 million has stood as the highest-grossing film of all time in the United States.

The film’s international performance has been just as remarkable. Its worldwide total climbed past $1.1 billion internationally, making it Sony’s biggest release ever overseas and edging out ‘No Way Home’s’ previous foreign benchmark of $1.106 billion.

For a franchise many assumed had already peaked with ‘No Way Home’ back in 2021, ‘Brand New Day’ is proving that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man still has room to grow. Whether the film ultimately catches ‘The Force Awakens’ or simply settles into the top five, its domestic run has already reshaped expectations for what a superhero movie can do at the box office in the current theatrical landscape.
