‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is About to Make Box Office History All over Again This Weekend

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has spent the entire summer treating box office records like a checklist to work through, and even after weeks in theaters, the film shows no sign of slowing down. What started as a record-breaking opening weekend has turned into one of the most sustained blockbuster runs in recent memory.

Sony and Marvel’s fourth solo outing for Tom Holland’s web-slinger opened to a staggering $360,000,000 domestically, the biggest domestic debut in box office history, and $932,000,000 globally, the second-largest global opening ever recorded. That momentum carried the film to $1,000,000,000 worldwide in just six days, the second-fastest pace ever behind only 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

Now the film is closing in on a milestone that no movie has ever actually achieved. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is expected to cross $900,000,000 at the domestic box office this weekend, putting it within reach of becoming the very first film in history to gross $1,000,000,000 domestically on its own.

As of the most recent tally, the film sat just $41,600,000 shy of the $900,000,000 mark, with box office analysts projecting another roughly $18,000,000 weekend that would push it firmly past that threshold. The only other film to come close to that domestic benchmark is 2015’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which finished its run at $936,600,000 without ever actually reaching the billion-dollar domestic mark.

‘Brand New Day’ has already surpassed several other significant milestones along the way, including becoming the fourth highest-grossing domestic release of all time and crossing $2,000,000,000 globally in roughly three weeks, the second-fastest film ever to do so behind ‘Endgame.’ The film currently ranks among an elite group of movies that have reached $2,000,000,000 worldwide, joining titles like ‘Avatar,’ ‘Titanic,’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige addressed the film’s unprecedented run, reflecting on the surprise of watching the studio’s 38th MCU release ultimately unseat ‘Endgame’s’ longstanding domestic opening record. The achievement is especially notable given that Marvel had come off a stretch of more modest box office performances with films like ‘Thunderbolts’ and ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ in the lead-up to this release.

The film’s continued dominance comes even as it faces competition from Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ which has become the director’s highest-grossing film ever with over $1,100,000,000 globally. Despite that competition, ‘Brand New Day’ has remained the top film at the domestic box office for five consecutive weekends, a run few blockbusters manage to sustain this deep into their theatrical release.

With Disney also planning a theatrical re-release of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ as ‘Avengers: Endgame: Encore’ on September 25, comparisons between the two franchise giants are only likely to intensify as ‘Brand New Day’ pushes toward uncharted box office territory. Whether it can actually cross the elusive billion-dollar domestic mark remains to be seen, but this weekend represents its best shot yet at making that history official.
