‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Inches Away from Smashing an 11-Year-Old Box Office Record

Box office records don’t fall very often, and when they do, it’s usually after years of speculation about whether anyone will ever get close. For more than a decade, one number in particular has loomed over Hollywood’s biggest releases, seemingly untouchable no matter how big the opening weekend got.

That number belongs to 2015’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which closed its domestic run at $936.5 million to become the highest-grossing release in North American box office history. Plenty of films have chased that total since, from Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to Disney’s earlier Spider-Man entries, but none have managed to actually catch it.

Now, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ is on the verge of finally doing it. According to Exhibitor Relations, the web-slinging sequel added another $8.4 million in its seventh week of release, pushing its domestic total to $935.1 million and putting it just $1.5 million away from taking the crown away from ‘The Force Awakens.’

Given the film’s momentum over the past several weeks, that gap is expected to close almost immediately. Sony and Marvel’s fourth standalone Spider-Man outing starring Tom Holland has spent its entire theatrical run rewriting the record books, from the biggest domestic opening weekend ever with $360 million to becoming the fastest movie in history to reach $900 million in North America.

‘Brand New Day’ also became the second-fastest film ever to cross $1 billion globally, trailing only ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and it did so while setting single-day records along the way, including the biggest Monday and Tuesday grosses in box office history. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and also starring Zendaya and Sadie Sink, the film reached $900 million domestically in just 36 days, compared to the 50 days it took ‘The Force Awakens’ to hit that same mark.

Its dominance at the top of the box office charts lasted 6 consecutive weekends, a feat matched by only one other release this decade. That streak finally ended in its seventh week, when the legacy sequel ‘Practical Magic 2’ took over the No. 1 spot, though ‘Brand New Day’ has continued adding millions to its total even after being dethroned.

With a reported production budget of around $225 million, the film has already earned back more than 10 times that amount worldwide, and its global total has climbed past $2.4 billion. That figure makes it not only the highest-grossing solo superhero movie ever released, but one of the biggest blockbusters of any kind in recent memory.

Once ‘Brand New Day’ officially surpasses ‘The Force Awakens,’ it will become the outright highest-grossing film in domestic box office history, not adjusted for inflation. That milestone alone would cap off what’s already been described as one of the best summer movie seasons since before the pandemic, with domestic ticket sales for the season reaching into the billions.

For a franchise that’s already delivered one billion-dollar hit with ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ watching ‘Brand New Day’ push past a Star Wars film that once felt permanently out of reach says a lot about where the character’s popularity stands heading into 2027. Whether the record falls this weekend or the next, it’s clear this Spider-Man chapter is going to be remembered as one of the biggest theatrical events in box office history.
