‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Setting Box Office Records in Every Market It Touches, and the Numbers Are Wild
Superhero fatigue has been a popular talking point across European markets for the past few years, with several recent Marvel releases struggling to match the box office highs of the pre-pandemic era. That narrative is getting a serious reality check this week as Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man outing begins its rollout across the continent.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ kicked off its European release on Wednesday, hitting major markets including Italy, the United Kingdom, and Spain ahead of its North American debut. Early results are already painting a picture of a film wildly outperforming expectations, even in territories where sessions only began in the late afternoon or evening.
In Italy, the film grossed an incredible 4.6 million dollars and drew 517,000 admissions on its opening Wednesday, setting a new post-Covid opening day record for Hollywood films in the country. That total edges out previous MCU benchmarks like ‘Inside Out 2’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ both at 3.5 million dollars, and ‘No Way Home’s’ 3.3 million dollar debut, landing as the second-biggest opening day of all time behind only ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ 5.8 million dollars, despite Italian screenings not starting until after 5 p.m.
The United Kingdom told a similarly staggering story. According to tracking shared online, ‘Brand New Day’ scored a spectacular 7.8 million dollars on Wednesday, marking the biggest opening day of 2026 at the British box office. That number topped ‘The Odyssey’s’ 5.8 million dollar debut, ‘Toy Story 5’s’ 5.5 million dollars, and ‘Project Hail Mary’s’ 5.2 million dollar Friday opening, all while UK sessions didn’t kick off until 5:30 p.m., essentially giving the film half a normal opening day compared to its competition.

That UK total ranks as the fifth-biggest opening day in the post-Covid era, trailing only ‘No Way Home’s’ 10.1 million dollars, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’s’ 10 million dollars, ‘Wicked: For Good’s’ 8.6 million dollars, and ‘Barbie’s’ 8.4 million dollars, while comfortably beating out ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ ‘No Time to Die,’ and ‘The Batman.’ Given the shortened session window, trackers are now projecting a strong 40 million to 50 million dollar five-day opening for the UK alone.
Spain rounded out the wave of strong early returns, with the film reportedly surpassing 3.2 million euros on its first day of screenings, marking the best opening in the country’s box office history according to local tracking service Rentrak Spain. Combined with the numbers out of Italy and the UK, it’s clear that European audiences are treating this release as more than just another Marvel sequel.
What makes these numbers particularly notable is the broader context surrounding Marvel’s recent performance overseas. Several of the studio’s post-Endgame releases, including ‘The Marvels,’ ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ and even the well-reviewed ‘Thunderbolts*,’ struggled to crack even seven figures on comparable single-day metrics in some of these same markets, making ‘Brand New Day’s’ opening feel like a genuine outlier rather than business as usual.

With the film’s rollout still expanding into additional territories and North American previews only just getting underway, these early European numbers suggest ‘Brand New Day’ could be building toward one of the biggest global openings the industry has seen in years. If this pace holds through the rest of the international release, Sony and Marvel may be looking at a genuine box office phenomenon on their hands.
