‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Tracking to Break ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ 11-Year Domestic Box Office Record

Box office records rarely feel truly permanent, but ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ domestic total has stood untouched for over a decade, long enough that most industry watchers assumed it would never actually be threatened. That assumption is now being seriously tested.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ opened to a record-setting $360 million domestically, immediately positioning itself as one of the biggest theatrical launches in history. Rather than settling into a typical post-opening decline, the film has continued setting new benchmarks week after week, becoming the fastest movie ever to cross $500 million domestically, doing so in just seven days and edging out the previous record held by ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

That relentless pace has now put an even bigger milestone within reach. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is tracking to become the highest-grossing film in domestic box office history, positioned to overtake the 11-year-old record currently held by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which has stood at $936.6 million since 2015.

The film’s second weekend alone brought in roughly $143 million, landing as the third-biggest sophomore weekend of all time, trailing only ‘The Force Awakens’ at $149.2 million and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $147 million. With $655 million already banked in North America after just ten days of release, ‘Brand New Day’ has generated more money at that point in its run than any other film in domestic box office history before adjusting for inflation.

What’s fueling the optimism around this milestone isn’t just the film’s massive debut, but how consistently it has continued performing well beyond opening weekend. Industry trackers have noted that surpassing ‘The Force Awakens’ total requires the film to maintain roughly a 2.6 times multiplier on its opening weekend numbers, a considerably more manageable bar than what ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ needed to hit similar milestones back in 2021.

That kind of sustained weekday and weekend strength has become the film’s defining trait throughout its run. ‘Brand New Day’ set the record for the biggest opening Monday and Tuesday in box office history, then followed that up with strong Wednesday and Thursday numbers, helping it cross the half-billion mark faster than any film ever has, including past juggernauts like ‘Endgame’ and ‘The Force Awakens’ itself.

Crossing ‘The Force Awakens’ domestic total would already be a historic achievement on its own, but some trackers are eyeing an even more ambitious target of $1 billion domestically, a benchmark no film has ever reached in North America alone. Clearing that mark would require surpassing ‘The Force Awakens’ total by more than $63 million, a number that once looked far-fetched but now appears increasingly plausible given the film’s trajectory.

For context, ‘The Force Awakens’ has held its position atop the domestic charts since 2015, a record that has survived challenges from massive Marvel releases, subsequent ‘Star Wars’ entries, and other blockbuster juggernauts over the past decade. A film finally dethroning it would mark one of the most significant shifts in modern box office history, especially coming from a franchise entry rather than a brand-new cinematic universe launch.

With no major competition on the release calendar through the rest of August, ‘Brand New Day’ appears well-positioned to keep climbing without facing the kind of direct challengers that might otherwise slow its momentum.
