That domestic haul builds on a run of records the film has been racking up since its July 31 release, having already surpassed ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ as the highest-grossing movie ever at the North American box office. ‘Brand New Day’ blew past that previous record of $936.66 million in just 47 days, a pace that took ‘The Force Awakens’ significantly longer to reach the same total back in 2015.

The film’s record-setting pace has been consistent from nearly its first day in theaters, starting with a then-unprecedented $72 million in preview ticket sales before its official release. While the film’s box office dollar totals are unprecedented, some analysts have pointed out that raw attendance tells its own compelling story given today’s higher average ticket prices. Using current pricing estimates, ‘Brand New Day’ has sold somewhere in the range of 73 to 75 million tickets domestically, a genuinely massive number for any modern release even if it still trails older films that benefited from lower ticket costs decades ago.

Globally, the film has continued climbing as well, surpassing $2.4 billion worldwide to become just the third movie in history to top that mark, trailing only ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ That kind of worldwide performance, paired with its historic domestic run, has made ‘Brand New Day’ one of the defining box office stories of the entire year.

Given how consistently ‘Brand New Day’ has defied expectations since its debut, betting against another milestone at this point feels increasingly risky.
