‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Knocked ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Out of the All-Time Top Five

Tom Holland’s latest outing as the wall-crawler has spent its entire theatrical run rewriting box office history, and the milestones haven’t slowed down even three weekends into release. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ arrived with the biggest opening weekend of all time and has continued climbing the all-time domestic charts at a pace few films have ever matched, drawing comparisons to the industry’s most legendary theatrical runs.

That climb has been driven by remarkably strong holds week after week, a pattern that’s kept the film in headlines even as competing titles have come and gone from theaters. By its second Thursday alone, the film had already crossed $715.9 million domestically, putting it nearly $57 million ahead of where ‘Avengers: Endgame’ stood at the same point in its own historic run.

That momentum carried the film past a major milestone this weekend. ‘Brand New Day’ officially surpassed ‘Top Gun: Maverick’s’ $721.9 million domestic total on its third Friday, according to Deadline, claiming the fifth spot on the all-time list of highest-grossing films in North American box office history. The film’s third weekend brought in roughly $67 million, a 54% drop from its previous frame, pushing its cumulative domestic total to $782.8 million after just 15 days in theaters.

That Friday performance alone set a new record, with the film’s approximately $19 million single-day total marking the biggest non-holiday third Friday ever recorded at the domestic box office. That figure edged out both ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ $16.2 million third Friday and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s’ $15.6 million mark from their respective runs, even as ‘Brand New Day’ posted a steeper 55.6% drop from its previous Friday.

With Top Gun: Maverick now pushed down the chart, only four films remain ahead of ‘Brand New Day’ on the all-time domestic list: ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ at $936.6 million, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $858.3 million, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ at $814.8 million, and ‘Avatar’ at $785.2 million. Given the film’s current pace, industry estimates suggest ‘Brand New Day’ could pass ‘Avatar’ as soon as this Sunday or Monday, putting it within roughly $32 million of overtaking ‘No Way Home’ shortly after.

That trajectory has fueled speculation about just how high the film could ultimately climb. Some estimates now put ‘Brand New Day’s’ eventual domestic total somewhere between $910 million and $960 million, a range that would make it only the second film in history to cross the $900 million mark domestically, and would put it within realistic striking distance of ‘The Force Awakens’s’ eleven-year-old record.

The film’s international performance has been just as remarkable, with its overseas total already surpassing ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ to become Sony’s biggest release ever outside North America. Combined with its record-setting domestic pace, ‘Brand New Day’ has become the fastest film ever to reach the $700 million domestic threshold, breaking a record previously shared by ‘The Force Awakens’ and ‘Endgame,’ both of which needed 16 days to hit that same mark.

With a fourth weekend still ahead and no signs of the film’s momentum slowing significantly, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ looks increasingly likely to finish its theatrical run as one of the biggest box office stories in recent memory. Between its domestic climb and its record international haul, the film has already secured a permanent place in box office history books regardless of where its final numbers ultimately land.
