‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Posted the Second-Biggest Second Wednesday in Box Office History

Box office records have become almost routine at this point for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ but the film keeps finding new ways to reset expectations for what a modern blockbuster run can look like. Two weeks removed from its record-shattering debut, the Tom Holland sequel is still generating headlines usually reserved for opening weekend, not the middle of its second full week in theaters.

That momentum traces directly back to an opening that already rewrote the record books. ‘Brand New Day’ launched to $360 million domestically, edging out ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ previous benchmark of $357.1 million, before backing that up with the third-biggest second weekend ever at roughly $145 million, trailing only ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ and ‘Endgame’ on that particular list.

Now, thirteen days into its run, the film has crossed $700 million domestically, officially becoming the fastest movie in box office history to hit that mark and surpassing ‘Black Panther’s’ full $700.4 million domestic total to claim the sixth spot on the all-time chart. Alongside that milestone, the film posted an estimated $13.5 million on its second Wednesday in theaters, landing as the second-biggest non-holiday second Wednesday ever recorded, trailing only ‘The Force Awakens’ at $28.1 million.

That Wednesday number represents a 58.7% drop from the previous Wednesday, a decline that actually compares favorably against past blockbuster benchmarks. ‘Endgame’ dropped 66.6% between its first and second Wednesdays, while ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ fell 49% over the same stretch, putting ‘Brand New Day’s’ hold somewhere in between those two comparison points.

With its domestic total now sitting at $704.6 million after thirteen days, ‘Brand New Day’ has built nearly a $52 million lead over ‘Endgame’ at the same point in its run, a gap that’s especially notable given the two films started their runs almost neck and neck, with ‘Brand New Day’ initially ahead by just $3 million. That widening margin suggests the film’s daily performance has consistently outpaced ‘Endgame’s’ pace rather than simply matching it.

If current trends hold through the weekend, industry trackers expect the film to clear $800 million domestically by next Tuesday at the latest. That trajectory has pushed projections toward a final domestic run somewhere between $910 million and $960 million, a range that would not only make it just the second film ever to cross $900 million domestically, but would put it within genuine striking distance of dethroning ‘The Force Awakens’ as the highest-grossing domestic release of all time.

‘The Force Awakens’ has held that record since 2015 with a final domestic total of $936.6 million, a benchmark that has survived challenges from numerous Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ releases over the past decade. With ‘Brand New Day’ already locking in a $50 million-plus advantage over ‘Endgame’ at this stage, that eleven-year-old record now looks more vulnerable than it has in years.

With no major competition on the release calendar through the rest of August, ‘Brand New Day’ appears well-positioned to keep extending its lead without facing the kind of direct challengers that typically slow a film’s momentum heading into its third and fourth weekends. Given how consistently the film has outperformed even its closest historical comparisons, the coming weeks should offer a much clearer picture of whether that record-breaking chase for ‘The Force Awakens’ actually pans out.

For a franchise many assumed had already peaked with ‘No Way Home,’ watching ‘Brand New Day’ methodically climb toward the top of the all-time domestic chart continues to defy expectations at nearly every turn.
