‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Pulled Off a Box Office Feat No Movie Has Matched Since ‘Titanic’

Superhero movies come and go from the top of the box office charts pretty quickly these days, usually ceding the number one spot within a couple of weeks to whatever big release lands next. That’s what made the summer of 2026 feel different from the moment Tom Holland swung back into theaters as Spider-Man.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ opened on July 31 and immediately started shattering records, from the biggest domestic opening weekend ever to the fastest climb to a billion dollars behind only ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Even by the standards of a franchise known for record-breaking debuts, the pace of this rollout stood out.

Now, that dominance has reached a milestone that hasn’t been touched in nearly three decades. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has spent a full month at number one at the domestic box office, making it the first film to accomplish that feat since ‘Titanic’ back in 1997.

Staying at number one for a single weekend is impressive enough in the modern release calendar, where a new wide release arrives almost every Friday looking to dethrone the current champion. Holding that top spot for four consecutive weekends, as ‘Brand New Day’ has done, is something the industry simply hasn’t seen from any film in decades.

The film’s fourth weekend alone brought in another $39 million domestically and $109 million globally, pushing its worldwide haul past the $2.2 billion mark. That kind of weekend-over-weekend consistency, rather than a single explosive opening followed by a steep decline, is exactly what allowed it to match a benchmark set by James Cameron’s romantic epic nearly 30 years ago.

‘Brand New Day’ also used that sustained momentum to climb the all-time global chart, officially overtaking ‘Titanic’s total theatrical haul to become the fourth highest-grossing movie ever made. Only ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and the original ‘Avatar’ now sit ahead of it worldwide.

Much of that longevity comes down to a lack of major competition willing to challenge Spider-Man head-on during its run, along with strong word of mouth carrying the film well past its opening weekend. Director Destin Daniel Cretton’s take on Peter Parker, which finds him operating without his usual support system while investigating a new threat, has resonated enough with audiences to keep ticket sales remarkably steady rather than collapsing after the first frame.

Holland’s performance has also drawn consistent praise throughout the film’s run, alongside co-stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal. That combination of critical goodwill and box office momentum has helped ‘Brand New Day’ avoid the usual second-month drop-off that even the biggest blockbusters tend to experience.

With ‘Ne Zha 2’ now the next target standing between Spider-Man and an even higher spot on the all-time chart, and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ set for a theatrical re-release later this month ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ the box office landscape is about to get more competitive. Still, matching a record that has stood since ‘Titanic’ cements ‘Brand New Day’ as one of the defining theatrical runs of the decade regardless of what happens next.
