‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’: Kevin Feige Says Sadie Sink’s Casting ‘Solidified’ Her Mysterious Character
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige may not be ready to reveal Sadie Sink’s mysterious Spider-Man: Brand New Day character, but he has finally explained why the Stranger Things star ended up with the role.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly alongside producer Amy Pascal, Feige explained that the process started with Peter Parker. The team first figured out the story they wanted to tell for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and then looked at which characters could fit into that story.
“We had a story for Peter,” Feige said. “And as Amy’s saying, it’s always about Peter. It always starts with Peter and ends with Peter. We had a Peter story that we wanted to tell, and knew that there were a number of characters that could fit into that. And it was Sadie’s name who came up that solidified the idea of the character that she’s playing.”
That comment is likely to make fans even more curious about Sink’s role. Marvel has kept her character almost completely secret, even as rumors have continued to spread online.
One of the biggest theories is that Sink could be playing Jean Grey, the powerful mutant known for her telepathic and telekinetic abilities. The rumor became so widespread that Sink herself has previously addressed it.
“That was happening before I even knew that I would be working on this project,” Sink told Entertainment Weekly in an earlier interview. “I was like, ‘Wait! What are people talking about?’”
There are plenty of other clues for fans to study, though. Trailers and set photos have shown Sink connected to a mysterious hooded figure who appears to have the ability to control other people. The character has been shown attacking Spider-Man through different bodies, including Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner in Hulk form and Michael Mando’s Mac Gargan, better known as Scorpion.
The strange figure also appears to take control of an older woman and use her to drive a tank through Manhattan. Exactly how Sink fits into those scenes remains one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the movie.
Feige and Pascal are still refusing to confirm whether Sink is actually behind the hood. Instead, Pascal offered a clue about the larger idea behind the character.
“It’s about wanting to be anybody else but who you are, and it’s about the desire to fit in and to not be different and to learn to understand that being different is okay — and maybe great,” Pascal explained.
That theme could be especially important for Peter Parker. After the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter is living in a world where nobody remembers who he is. Brand New Day appears ready to explore what it means for him to build a new life while dealing with the loneliness that comes with being completely forgotten.
Whatever Sink’s actual role turns out to be, Feige clearly believes she was the right person to bring the character to life. He praised the entire cast and pointed out how difficult it is to join such an established group of performers.
“It’s a high bar to join this cast. This cast is very, very good and very accomplished, and she fits in perfectly,” Feige said.

With Marvel still keeping the answer secret, fans may have to wait until Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters to finally learn who Sink is playing. Until then, the Jean Grey theory and the mysterious hooded villain will continue to fuel plenty of speculation.
