‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Might Be About to Shatter the Biggest Box Office Record in Hollywood History

Every summer brings its share of box office buzzwords, from “tracking” to “presales” to “exit polls,” but every so often a single release manages to make all of them feel like an understatement. This weekend, that release is ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.‘

Sony and Marvel’s latest webslinging sequel had already generated some of the most feverish advance interest of the year heading into its release, with presales alone hinting at a genuinely historic opening. As Thursday night turned into Friday morning, industry trackers began suggesting the film’s numbers were climbing even higher than expected.

According to reports circulating from box office trackers, previews for ‘Brand New Day’ are now being pegged in the $70 million range, with some estimates pushing as high as $75 million once Wednesday night’s early Prime Video member screening is factored in. If those figures hold up, they would represent a jump of roughly 20 to 25 percent over the previous all-time preview record.

That record currently belongs to ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which set the previous high-water mark at $60 million back in 2019. For years, that number has been treated as something close to untouchable, a benchmark tied to one of the most anticipated theatrical events in modern movie history. A challenge of this scale to that record is exactly the kind of moment box office watchers wait years to see.

Deadline had already confirmed earlier reporting that ‘Brand New Day’s previews were outpacing ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’s own $50 million preview haul from 2021, positioning the film as the third-best previews ever at the time. The newer figures being floated by trackers would push the film well past that mark and into a tier previously occupied by only Endgame and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’

Early audience reaction appears to be matching the box office momentum. Initial exit scores for the film are reportedly landing near A-plus territory, an exceptionally strong result that suggests the enthusiasm driving ticket sales is translating into genuine satisfaction once audiences actually see the movie.

That combination of huge previews and glowing exit scores has trackers revising their opening weekend expectations upward yet again. Where earlier projections had clustered in the $230 million to $280 million range, some of the newest estimates are now suggesting a domestic weekend anywhere from $330 million to $370 million, a figure that would land the film in rarefied territory alongside Endgame’s all-time opening weekend record of $357.1 million.

It’s worth noting that these are still early trackers’ estimates rather than confirmed studio numbers, and official Friday grosses will offer the clearest picture of where the film actually lands. Still, the fact that comparisons to Endgame’s opening weekend record are even being discussed underscores just how remarkable this rollout has been.

The film’s momentum comes despite it playing without a single domestic IMAX screen, after Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ locked down an exclusivity agreement with the format earlier in July. That ‘Brand New Day’ is challenging historic records without access to one of the industry’s most valuable premium formats only adds to how unusual this opening weekend has become.

Instead of IMAX, Sony leaned on an alternative premium format, ScreenX, with ‘Brand New Day’ becoming the first film ever shot specifically for the panoramic 270-degree presentation. The film has also been playing across Dolby Cinema and other large-format screens nationwide, giving audiences plenty of premium options even without the IMAX label attached.

The broader context also matters here. This summer’s box office had been considered somewhat sluggish heading into the film’s release, with several high-profile titles underperforming expectations before Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ delivered a strong debut of its own. A record-threatening opening for ‘Brand New Day’ would represent a major jolt for theaters heading into the final stretch of the summer season.

Whatever the final tally ends up being, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has already cemented itself as one of the defining box office stories of the year.
