‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Officially Dethrones ‘Avengers: Endgame’ as the Highest-Grossing MCU Film in U.S. History

Marvel’s biggest domestic box office record has stood untouched for more than half a decade, a benchmark set during the franchise’s most emotionally charged crossover event that many assumed would remain unbeatable for years to come. That assumption just got dismantled entirely.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has spent the past several weeks methodically climbing through Marvel’s box office history, breaking records at a pace few blockbusters manage to sustain this deep into a theatrical run. What started as a record-setting opening weekend has now culminated in the film claiming the single biggest prize in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s domestic history.

“Brand New Day” has officially surpassed “Avengers: Endgame’s” 858 million dollar domestic total, making it the highest-grossing MCU film ever released in the United States. The film crossed that threshold while holding onto the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office for a fourth consecutive weekend, even with fresh competition from fellow Sony release “Insidious: Out of the Further.”

The film’s climb to the top of Marvel’s domestic charts began with an unprecedented opening weekend. “Brand New Day” debuted to 360 million dollars domestically, breaking the previous opening weekend record of 357.1 million dollars set by “Avengers: Endgame” back in 2019, while also posting a massive 932 million dollar global opening.

That momentum carried through subsequent weekends at a pace few films ever sustain. The movie crossed 1 billion dollars worldwide in just six days and became the biggest film of the year within a single week of release, outpacing releases like “Toy Story 5” and “The Odyssey.” Its consistent weekend-over-weekend performance, rather than the steep drop-offs typical of most blockbusters, is what ultimately allowed it to overtake “Endgame’s” long-standing domestic record.

“Brand New Day” has also positioned itself as the second-biggest domestic release in box office history overall, trailing only “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Rotten Tomatoes lists the film’s critical consensus as praising its combination of spectacular set pieces, mature emotional stakes and Tom Holland’s soulful performance, a promising reset that suggests staying power for the franchise going forward.

Despite its new domestic crown, “Brand New Day” hasn’t yet matched “Endgame’s” complete box office dominance. Globally, “Endgame” still holds the top spot in the MCU with a 2.7 billion dollar worldwide haul, a total “Brand New Day” currently trails by roughly half a billion dollars.

Early projections suggest “Brand New Day” could ultimately finish its theatrical run somewhere between 2.5 and 2.7 billion dollars worldwide, a figure that would place it as the third-biggest film ever made, trailing only “Endgame” and “Avatar.” That said, both of those films benefited from theatrical re-releases over the years to pad their final totals, a factor that could still come into play for “Brand New Day” as well given Marvel’s pattern of rereleasing its biggest hits.

The film’s success has arrived alongside an unusually strong overall stretch for the domestic box office. The same record-setting opening weekend that “Brand New Day” delivered also helped create the biggest three-day domestic frame in box office history, a combined 429 million dollars across all films in release, powered largely by “Brand New Day” alongside Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey.”

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal, “Brand New Day” continues adding to its totals with each passing weekend. With the film still playing strong in theaters and Marvel’s own history of extending box office runs through rereleases, its final numbers may not be locked in for some time yet.
