This new Spider-Man movie will be the next release in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Tom Holland will return as Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, continuing his role in the MCU.
While plot details are still mostly a secret, fans do know that Jon Bernthal will appear again as the Punisher. The cast also includes Sadie Sink from Stranger Things and Liza Colón-Zayas from The Bear, though their characters haven’t been revealed yet. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon will be back as Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson and Ned Leeds.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige shared some thoughts about the film’s direction. He said, “I think there’s a promise at the end of No Way Home that, for as sad as it is, that Peter is forgotten by everyone in his life. We are seeing, for the first time in the Tom Holland Spider-Man stories, him being a proper Spider-Man. Him being, by himself, dedicated to saving the city, and dealing with—for lack of a better term—street-level crime as opposed to world-ending events that he faced when working with the other characters.”
Feige added, “So when you do that, you say, ‘OK, who are the other street-level characters that we’ve never seen him interact with?’ And of course, I love that the Punisher started in a Spider-Man comic, and that great cover . . . I don’t wanna say too much, but I will say too much. [Director Destin Daniel Cretton] is doing an amazing job right now on that movie. It starts shooting very soon, and he’s got 8 or 9 comic covers up on his wall in his art department that he is bringing to life in this movie. It’s super cool.”
The story of how this film came to be stretches back several years. By 2019, a fourth Spider-Man film was already being planned along with No Way Home. Tom Holland once said that No Way Home would be his last film under his contract, but he hoped to keep playing Spider-Man if the right project came along. He even mentioned interest in a story focusing on Miles Morales.
Amy Pascal, a producer, expressed hope to continue working with Holland on more Spider-Man movies. Later, plans were made for a new trilogy starring Holland, though Sony hadn’t officially set everything in stone.
Kevin Feige confirmed that Marvel, Sony, and Disney were working closely on the next Spider-Man film after the events of No Way Home. He promised the partnership would be stronger this time around. Even after director Jon Watts stepped away from Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Sony expected him, Holland, and Zendaya to eventually return for the next Spider-Man movie.
Work on the script started, but the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike caused a delay. Holland has been part of the discussions and said he wants to return only if the story does justice to Spider-Man.
Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is set to direct this sequel. Filming was originally planned to start in mid-2025, and now production officially begins on August 1, 2025. The movie’s release date is set for July 31, 2026.
Sadie Sink joined the cast in early 2025, and Liza Colón-Zayas was added later. Jon Bernthal’s return as Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, was confirmed too. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon will also return, though how much they appear is still unclear.
