‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Re-Release Reportedly Brings Back Rosario Dawson’s Cut Claire Temple Scene

Studios rarely pass up the chance to squeeze more life out of a runaway hit, and this fall has made that obvious. Disney’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ re-release just minted $86 million worldwide, including $26 million domestically. Numbers like that get noticed across Hollywood.

Sony is now reportedly eyeing a return trip for its own box office titan, and the ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ re-release talk has fans buzzing. The film has spent the summer rewriting the record books. It broke the record for the biggest opening weekend with $360 million, and it now sits at $950.7 million domestically and $2.5 billion worldwide.

Here is the part that has fans talking. In an exclusive report, Deadline says the movie is getting a re-release with extra footage that includes, but is not limited to, Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple. The outlet adds that there will be more surprises in the extra footage.

For anyone who skipped Marvel’s Netflix era, Claire is the nurse who patches up the city’s vigilantes. She appeared in the first two seasons of ‘Daredevil’, then in ‘Jessica Jones’, ‘Iron Fist’, ‘Luke Cage’ and the crossover series ‘The Defenders’. She is one of the most recognizable connective threads of that corner of the MCU.

The return would be a big one. It would be her first MCU appearance since the second season of ‘Luke Cage’ in 2018, and her first appearance in an MCU movie. That makes it a notable step for a character who has been away for years.

Fans have known for a while that something was left on the cutting room floor. At a GalaxyCon panel in Raleigh, North Carolina, Dawson said she had shot a scene for the new Spider-Man movie but was cut out. She also said she loves that her character lives somewhere in the same universe, and that she hopes to play Claire again.

The scene itself appears to fit neatly into the story. It reportedly showed Dawson caring for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the hospital when he wakes up, before it was swapped for Jon Bernthal’s Punisher to boost the emotional impact. That would place it right after the Punisher takes Spider-Man to the hospital following a shot meant for Jean Grey.

Restoring it could also fill a story gap. Claire’s ties to the New York vigilante community would help explain how Frank Castle and Jean Grey got Peter treated without exposing his secret identity. Sometimes a deleted scene is a piece of connective tissue the theatrical cut didn’t need to spell out, and this could be one of them.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton has talked about extra material before. He previously told TheWrap that a version of the movie tested with an extra 30 minutes, though he still called the theatrical version his preferred cut. That suggests plenty of footage exists, even if it isn’t all destined for the big screen.

Nobody is saying, which only fuels the speculation. Some fans are wondering about other ‘Daredevil’ stars such as Vincent D’Onofrio, though nothing has been confirmed. The Marvel street-level crowd has a long history of dropping into Spider-Man’s world.

Charlie Cox played Matt Murdock in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, where he offered Peter legal advice. Cox later suited up again for ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ on Disney+. A Claire cameo would fit that pattern.

There is still a lot we don’t know. No release date has been announced for the re-release, and other details are still under wraps. Sony had no comment.

The ‘Endgame’ playbook may offer a clue. Its reissue was a marketing push for December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and included new short scenes. Sony and Marvel could try something similar to keep the momentum going.

The box office stakes are huge. The film is just shy of becoming the first title to top $1 billion in North America, so a re-release could push it over the edge. TheWrap notes that a $20 million opening for a re-issue would be enough to get there, a feat never before accomplished.

The global race is tight too. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ sits at No. 2 all-time worldwide with $2.885 billion, while ‘Brand New Day’ ranks No. 3 with $2.49 billion. A second run with new scenes could make the chase interesting.
