‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Refuses to Slow Down, Closing in on a Box Office Record That’s Stood for 11 Years

Summer blockbusters usually start fading fast once Labor Day rolls around, as moviegoers shift attention toward fall releases and studios begin clearing the way for their next big tentpoles. That pattern has yet to catch up with Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man outing.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has spent the past six weekends refusing to budge from the top of the domestic box office charts, a run that’s already made it the fastest film in history to cross $900,000,000 domestically, beating a record previously held by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ for over a decade. Even as Labor Day traffic typically slows down holdover films, this one has continued pulling in numbers that would be impressive for a fresh opening weekend.

The film’s domestic total now sits at roughly $925,000,000, putting it within striking distance of ‘The Force Awakens’s’ all-time domestic record of $936,600,000. Industry trackers now project ‘Brand New Day’ finishing its run somewhere between $950,000,000 and $960,000,000 domestically, positioning it to become the highest-grossing film of all time in North America, unadjusted for inflation.

Even on a traditionally slower promotional day, the film continued showing real strength. On its sixth Tuesday discount showing, ‘Brand New Day’ grossed a reported $1,500,000, only a 42.9% drop from the previous Tuesday’s total, a far steeper decline than comparable holdovers like ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which saw a 35.3% dip at the same stage, or ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ which dropped 40.4%.

That performance came despite the film losing 158 theaters heading into the weekend, a sign that audience demand has remained remarkably resilient even as the film’s theatrical footprint has started to shrink in favor of newer fall releases.

Perhaps most striking is how ‘Brand New Day’ compares to ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at the same point in its release. Despite starting its run just $3,000,000 ahead of Endgame’s pace, ‘Brand New Day’ is now running roughly $108,000,000 ahead of where Endgame stood domestically at the same point in its theatrical release, a gap that underscores just how unusual this film’s staying power has been.

That comparison matters given how ‘Endgame’ was long considered the modern gold standard for post-opening-weekend box office legs. ‘Brand New Day’ clearing that benchmark by such a wide margin puts it in genuinely rare company among modern blockbusters.

Much of that staying power traces back to the film’s reception straight out of the gate. ‘Brand New Day’ earned an A CinemaScore from opening weekend audiences, the second-highest grade the polling firm awards, placing it alongside ‘Homecoming,’ ‘Far From Home,’ and ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ in the franchise’s overall CinemaScore rankings, just behind the A+ grades earned by ‘No Way Home’ and ‘Into the Spider-Verse.’

Combined with its Certified Fresh 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 98% audience score, that reception has helped the film sustain strong word-of-mouth well past its record-breaking opening weekend, which itself set the all-time domestic single-day record with $168,000,000 on its Friday debut.

‘The Force Awakens’ has held its position as the top domestic earner of all time since 2015, a run that’s outlasted multiple would-be challengers over the past decade. With ‘Brand New Day’ now closing in on that milestone within weeks rather than months, Sony and Marvel appear on the verge of rewriting the domestic box office record books entirely.

Given how far ahead of pace the film remains even deep into its theatrical run, it now looks less like a question of if ‘Brand New Day’ will claim the all-time domestic crown, and more a matter of exactly how high its final total will climb.
