‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Star Sadie Sink’s Perfect Day Off Is Doing Absolutely Nothing, and Fans Totally Get It

Even the busiest young stars need a day when nothing happens. For Sadie Sink, whose last couple of years have been a blur of film sets, press tours and farewells, that kind of break sounds like the ultimate luxury. Her idea of a perfect day off is refreshingly simple, and it has fans nodding along.

Sink first joined ‘Stranger Things’ at 14 in season 2, and she has grown up in front of a global audience ever since. She has also moved from Max Mayfield to a role in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ where she plays Jean Grey. Few people have juggled that much change in such a short time.

So what does a day of rest look like for her? She told The Hollywood Reporter that she could happily spend a day inside “watching TV and rotting.” The remark is making the rounds again this week, and it’s easy to see why.

Sink joked that she is a pretty boring person, and that her New Year’s resolution is to pick up more hobbies. The comment came in a Hollywood Reporter interview published in late December, as the final season of ‘Stranger Things’ was wrapping up. The series finale arrived on New Year’s Eve.

The admission lands because it’s so ordinary. For many people, the ideal break is a day on the couch with a favorite show, and nothing more ambitious than that. Hearing a movie star say the same thing makes her feel less like a distant celebrity and more like a friend.

She also explained why she gravitates toward doing nothing. By her account, being on set is deeply social, since she is constantly around people and giving so much of herself, both in performance and behind the scenes. She added that it can be overstimulating.

Her solution is blunt. For every day on set, she says she needs about a week of recovery, or at least 3 or 4 days of doing nothing. It’s a candid look at how much energy acting takes out of her, even for someone who clearly loves the work.

In the same conversation, Sink said she still gravitates toward darker, more demanding material. She also suggested that in a couple of years she might want to do a comedy or something really light, which she says she has been saying for a while. That mix of ambition and exhaustion makes the day-off confession feel like part of a bigger picture.

The calm is well earned. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ supplanted ‘Avengers: Endgame’ as the biggest domestic debut in box office history and grossed $1.15 billion worldwide in just 7 days, per Variety. Sink is the third actress to play Jean Grey, after Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner, and she has confirmed that she will appear in Jake Schreier’s ‘X-Men.’

There is more on her plate. A24 and Square Peg are reportedly negotiating for the rights to Emma Cline’s bestselling novel ‘The Guest,’ with Sink in talks to star and produce and Lorene Scafaria in talks to write and direct. She also made her mark on Broadway as Shelby in ‘John Proctor Is the Villain’ and became a Tony nominee.

Leaving Max behind has been an emotional process. Sink told The Hollywood Reporter that she cried so much on her last day that she felt she had grieved properly, but she feared a second wave of emotion once the finale streamed. Around that time, she also found herself asking whether she still wanted to keep doing this, according to Harper’s Bazaar.

Seen in that light, her love of doing nothing starts to look like a form of self-care. After a decade of nonstop work, resting is part of how she keeps going.

What is your idea of a perfect day off?
