‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Star Tom Holland Just Did Something No Actor in History Has Ever Achieved (And It May Never Happen Again)

Some actors get lucky with one blockbuster. Others manage to land in a handful of massive box office hits over the course of a long career. Then there’s Tom Holland, whose specific corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has somehow put him at the center of box office history over and over again.

Holland’s journey as Peter Parker has taken him from a scrappy teenage hero in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ to the center of some of the biggest ensemble events Marvel has ever produced. Along the way, he’s quietly become attached to nearly every major box office milestone the studio has hit.

That streak has now culminated in a record no other actor can claim. Tom Holland has starred in all four of the biggest opening weekends of all time at the global box office, making him the first actor in history to achieve that distinction.

The number four spot alone tells a story of Marvel’s dominance over the last several years. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ still holds the top spot with its staggering $1.2 billion global opening weekend from 2019, a record that has stood untouched for years despite countless attempts by other blockbusters to come close.

Right behind it now sits ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which stormed into theaters with a $927 million worldwide debut, falling short of ‘Endgame’ but still landing as the second-biggest global opening ever recorded. Rounding out the top four are ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ which opened to $640.5 million in 2018, and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ which debuted to $587.2 million worldwide in 2021.

Holland had a hand in every single one of those films, whether as the lead swinging through New York City or as part of the sprawling Avengers roster fighting Thanos across two of the franchise’s biggest crossover events. It’s a run that spans nearly a decade, starting with his introduction to the role and continuing through the character’s evolution into one of the most bankable names in the business.

What makes the achievement especially notable is how differently each of those films arrived at their massive numbers. ‘Endgame’ and ‘Infinity War’ leaned on years of interconnected storytelling and an ensemble cast built up across dozens of prior releases, while ‘No Way Home’ capitalized on a once-in-a-generation multiverse reunion with previous Spider-Man actors. ‘Brand New Day,’ by contrast, achieved its historic debut without any of those crossover gimmicks, relying instead on pure demand for Holland’s version of the character after a five-year gap since his last solo outing.

That distinction underscores just how unusual Holland’s position in the industry has become. Plenty of actors have starred in one or two box office giants, but consistently showing up at the center of the single biggest openings the industry has ever produced, across both ensemble tentpoles and standalone releases, is a different kind of accomplishment entirely.

With ‘Brand New Day’ still playing in theaters and Marvel’s next major crossover event on the horizon, there’s a real chance Holland could extend this streak even further before all is said and done. For now, though, he stands alone at the top of a list that no other actor in Hollywood has ever managed to crack.
