Spider-Man Punches Jake Lang at Minneapolis Rally as Viral Video Turns Chaotic Clash Into Internet Sensation
Political demonstrations rarely produce imagery that looks like it belongs in a superhero movie, but a confrontation outside Minneapolis City Hall managed to do exactly that. The clash involving Jake Lang and counter-protesters quickly spread online, with footage from the scene drawing attention far beyond the rally itself.
Lang, a far-right activist whose demonstrations have repeatedly attracted counter-protests, arrived in Minneapolis for a planned gathering outside City Hall. According to Minneapolis police and local reporting, authorities had prepared for the event with additional personnel and barricades intended to keep opposing groups separated.
The most bizarre moment came during the confrontation itself, when a person dressed in a Spider-Man costume climbed onto the pickup truck carrying Lang and appeared to punch him. The incident was captured on video and later shared by TMZ, with the screenshot accompanying the report showing the costumed figure striking Lang during the chaotic encounter.
The superhero imagery quickly became the defining visual of the confrontation. Local reporting confirmed that the man wearing the Spider-Man costume was involved in the physical clash and was subsequently arrested, while footage and photographs from the scene spread rapidly across social media.
The confrontation was more serious than the viral superhero moment might initially suggest. Minneapolis police said 2 vehicles associated with Lang’s group drove onto the sidewalk toward a crowd outside City Hall at around 11:50 a.m. Saturday, prompting a confrontation between people in the vehicles and counter-protesters.
Interim Minneapolis Police Chief Bill Peterson said officers had known about the demonstration for weeks and had developed a detailed security plan for the event. Police ultimately arrested the occupants of both vehicles on probable cause riot, while the vehicles themselves were impounded, according to local reporting.
The confrontation also involved chemical irritants and injuries, adding another layer of seriousness to the spectacle unfolding around City Hall. Police said additional arrests were made near the scene for suspected offenses ranging from disorderly conduct to assault, while 3 police officers were reported injured during the broader incident.
Against that backdrop, the costumed counter-protester became the unmistakable viral centerpiece. Video showing the Spider-Man figure climbing onto the vehicle and confronting Lang circulated widely, with TMZ describing the footage as showing the masked figure jumping onto Lang and striking him during the Saturday rally.
Other images from the scene show the Spider-Man impersonator confronting people around Lang’s vehicle, reinforcing that the encounter was part of a much larger confrontation rather than an isolated exchange. Photographer Chad Davis also documented the costumed counter-protester at City Hall during the rally.
The episode has naturally produced a flood of superhero jokes and memes online, with social-media users treating the footage as an almost surreal collision between comic-book imagery and real-world political conflict. Reddit discussions about the incident also showed how quickly the Spider-Man appearance became the focus of online reaction.
Despite the comedic appearance of the costume, authorities did not treat the confrontation as a movie-like spectacle. Reporting from the Minnesota Star Tribune states that both Lang and the man dressed as Spider-Man were arrested following the physical altercation, while Lang remained jailed after the incident.
The arrests came after police had initially allowed the vehicles to leave the immediate City Hall area because attempting to detain people while the crowd surrounded the vehicles was considered unsafe. Officers later stopped the vehicles with assistance from other law-enforcement agencies, leading to the arrests.
For Lang, the Minneapolis confrontation now adds another arrest to a year already marked by legal troubles and contentious demonstrations. For the internet, however, the lasting image is considerably stranger: a political rally outside City Hall suddenly producing footage of a Spider-Man impersonator climbing onto a truck and throwing a punch.
