‘Spider-Noir’ Star Nicolas Cage Teases Talks to Join Hit Crime Anthology Series Fans Have Been Waiting On
Nicolas Cage recently spoke in a wide-ranging interview with Variety, where he discussed many parts of his career, including his long history with superhero films and his recent work in television. One of the topics that came up was the future of HBO’s crime anthology series True Detective, which has been developing its fifth season.
According to reporting from Variety, Cage said he is not officially attached to the show and does not have confirmed involvement. He made it clear that nothing has been finalized yet, even though his name has appeared in earlier casting rumors. He explained that conversations may be happening, but there is no signed deal or confirmed role at this stage.
Cage was direct when asked about the project. He said, “I have no idea. I think they’re working on the material, but I haven’t heard about it in quite some time. I’m not signed on to anything; we’re just talking.”
The actor also mentioned that while he has not seen earlier seasons of True Detective, he respects the series and the people involved. He said he would be open to working with showrunner Issa López, who is leading the upcoming season, but again stressed that nothing is official yet.
His comments match earlier production updates shared by HBO leadership. Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film, told Deadline that True Detective Season 5 is in early development and is expected to film in the coming months, with casting still being worked out. She also said the new season will be set in New York, specifically Jamaica Bay, and that filming is planned to begin soon, with a 2027 release window being discussed.
Orsi added that the writers room is already active and scripts are being developed. She described the project as still early in the process, with casting being one of the main steps left before production can fully begin.

True Detective Season 4, titled Night Country, was released in 2024 and starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. It followed an investigation in Alaska and became one of the most talked-about entries in the series, with Foster winning an Emmy for her performance. The upcoming Season 5 will be a new story with new characters, continuing the anthology format.
For now, Cage’s involvement remains uncertain. His own comments suggest that discussions may exist behind the scenes, but fans should not expect any confirmation until HBO officially announces the cast.
As Cage summed up in his interview, there is interest, but nothing locked in yet, and the project is still taking shape.
