Just when fans thought Squid Game was done, its creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has left a possibility open for more seasons. After the intense finale of Season 3, he hinted that Season 4 could happen, or maybe it won’t. He’s keeping things unclear, which has fans guessing about what’s next for the popular show.

Hwang has talked before about expanding the Squid Game world but never gave a definite answer. The Season 3 ending wrapped up the story of the main character, Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, but it also left some questions unanswered. There are still backstories to explore and a hint about a potential U.S. spin-off.

Netflix seems excited to grow the franchise. Besides the main series, they recently greenlit another season of Squid Game: The Challenge, a British reality show inspired by Squid Game. This makes fans hope there will be more Squid Game content, either in a new season or spin-offs.

When asked about a new season or spin-off on Good Morning America, Hwang said, “There’s a saying, ‘Never say never.’ Yeah, I never close the door… we will see. It’s still up in the air.” This vague answer has created even more buzz, sounding like a mysterious line from The Karate Kid, and fans are eager to find out what comes next.

In October 2024, Deadline reported that Netflix was working on a Squid Game spin-off with famous director David Fincher attached to the project. But since then, there hasn’t been much news, and fans wonder if it’s still in progress.

Hwang talked to Variety to clear up some rumors about Cate Blanchett’s cameo in Season 3. He said it doesn’t connect to the Fincher spin-off. “Actually no, not at all. It’s not related to that. All I wanted to have was just an impactful ending, and that’s all that was to it. Honestly, I haven’t heard officially from Netflix about David Fincher creating a Squid Game,” he explained. “I have heard the rumors of course though. But again, it was just the ending that I wanted for Season 3.”

For now, the future of Squid Game is still unclear. Hwang Dong-hyuk hasn’t said no to more episodes or spin-offs, but he’s not promising anything either. Fans will just have to wait and see what happens next.
