Simu Liu, Star of MCU’s ‘Shang-Chi’ Is as Frustrated as You Are by the Lack of Progress on the Sequel

‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ was an unexpected hit for the studio. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the movie stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must face his past when his father, Wenwu, the leader of the Ten Rings organization, drags him and his sister Xialing into a search for a mythical village. The cast also includes Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley, and Tony Leung.

In December 2021, work on a ‘Shang-Chi’ sequel began, with Destin Daniel Cretton returning to write and direct. Simu Liu, who plays Shang-Chi, was also expected to return and wanted the sequel to explore how his character uses the “newfound power” of the Ten Rings and his place in the bigger MCU.

In July 2023, Liu said he wasn’t sure when the film would be made. By November, Cretton stepped down as director of ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ now known as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ to focus on the ‘Shang-Chi’ sequel, and filming was set to start in March 2025.

Later that month, Liu confirmed the sequel was in development, addressing fan concerns about the lack of news.

Liu was pretty open about his disappointment when it comes to the sequel and how long the development takes. He recently once again reaffirmed this when he liked a comment on social media chastizing the studio for not making the sequel sooner:

Earlier this year, Simu Liu expressed that he’s not sure when Shang-Chi will return to the MCU, saying those decisions are out of his control. He just wants to remain a fan of the franchise and will be ready whenever he gets the call about his next role or appearance.

Oh man, I don’t know to be honest. I mean, those things are so above my pay grade. I just wanna continue to be a fan of it. You know, when I get a call of like, ‘Hey, this is what your in and this is where you’re going to show up. And, this is when you’re going to be need to be blacked out for.’

Not all is grim when it comes to the character’s fate in the MCU however as Shang-Chi will play an important role in the upcoming animated “event” ‘Marvel Zombies.’ Considering that Destin Daniel Cretton has been announced to direct the upcoming ‘Spider-Man 4’ fans have been speculating we might see Shang-Chi in that movie as well.

There are rumors that Ten Rings will have a similar role in the Multiverse Saga as Infinity Stones had in the Infinity Saga, so, fingers crossed!
