Paramount+ has released a new trailer for its upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, giving fans a first real look at the show. The trailer debuted at New York Comic Con on Saturday, and the series is set to premiere on January 15.

The show focuses on Starfleet members in their early twenties, exploring their training, challenges, and personal lives.

The latest trailer turns up the drama, showing some cadet romance, tense moments, and a very angry Paul Giamatti, who plays a recurring alien villain. Some viewers online had mixed reactions, with one YouTube commenter calling the first teaser “TikTok Space P***”.

“This new look dials back the Gen Z emoting and ramps up the dramatic intensity,” the network said, highlighting the more serious tone of the series.

The cast includes Holly Hunter as the Academy’s chancellor, Robert Picardo returning as The Doctor, and Tatiana Maslany appearing as a special guest star in season one. The main cadets are played by Sandro Rosta, Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, and Zoë Steiner.

Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau are co-showrunners and executive producers on the series, joined by Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber.

Starfleet Academy arrives at a key moment for Paramount+’s Star Trek lineup. Previous shows like Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Prodigy have concluded, while Strange New Worlds recently returned for season three and has been renewed for a fifth and final season. With the franchise in transition, Starfleet Academy is being positioned as Paramount+’s next big hope to attract a new generation of viewers.
