Disney+ has officially greenlit a new docuseries featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, marking another collaboration between the two actors after Deadpool & Wolverine. The announcement comes from Disney+ and related production partners involved in the project.

The series will follow Reynolds and Jackman as they step into the world of competitive sailing through their ownership role in the Bonds Flying Roos team, which competes in the SailGP Championship. According to the official description, the show will track elite sailing teams as they travel around the world and compete in high-speed races, while also introducing the two Hollywood stars into the sport’s intense environment.

The description of the show states that the Australian team will face top international rivals in a global competition. It also highlights the leadership of driver and CEO Tom Slingsby, who is described as an Olympic gold medallist, America’s Cup winner, and multiple-time SailGP champion. The series will focus on both the sporting competition and the behind-the-scenes learning curve for its celebrity owners.

Reynolds and Jackman addressed the project in a joint statement. They said, “This is our first collaboration since ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and we once again anticipate action, comedy, heart but with a lot more water,” and added, “And (fingers crossed) pirates. We hope there’s pirates in SailGP.” Their comments reflect the playful tone both actors are known for, especially when working together.

SailGP itself is a global sailing championship where national teams race identical 50-foot foiling catamarans. The boats can reach speeds above 60 miles per hour, and the competition includes some of the most experienced sailors in the world. The championship also features a large prize pool, adding to the intensity of the races.

The new docuseries continues a growing trend at Disney and FX of celebrity-led sports documentaries. One of the most successful examples is Welcome to Wrexham, which follows Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s ownership of Welsh football club Wrexham AFC. Another related series, Necaxa, focuses on Eva Longoria’s involvement with the Mexican football club of the same name. Reynolds and McElhenney also serve as executive producers on several of these projects.

The sailing series is being produced by Maximum Effort and Eureka Productions in partnership with SailGP and the Bonds Flying Roos team. Brent Hodge is attached as director and showrunner. According to Disney Television Studios executive Eric Schrier, the project will give viewers an inside look at both the sport and the team’s journey. He said the series will show “what it takes to compete at the highest level” while bringing the story to a global Disney+ audience.

The show does not yet have an official title or release date, but it adds another project to the ongoing collaboration between Reynolds and Jackman, who have continued to work together beyond their Marvel roles.
