Stephen King’s Latest Supernatural Horror Show Scores Season 2 Renewal Amid Mixed Critic Response
Stephen King’s The Institute is returning for a second season, despite getting mixed reviews when it first premiered.
The show, which blends sci-fi, horror, and supernatural elements, debuted in July on MGM+ and is based on King’s 2019 novel of the same name. It follows a group of kids with special abilities who are abducted and held in a mysterious institute.
King, who serves as an executive producer on the series, shared the news of the renewal on X just days before the season finale on August 24. “The kids continue to fight against the secrets and dangers of the institute,” he said, highlighting the tension and suspense that drives the story.

The cast includes Ben Barnes, Mary-Louise Parker, and Joe Freeman, with the show focusing on a young teenager discovering the dark truths behind the place where gifted children are held.
Critics had a mixed reaction to the first season. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 65% approval rating from 23 reviews, with the consensus stating that “The Institute won’t keep everyone committed but still offers up enough intrigue to merit a tour.”
Metacritic gave the show a 51 out of 100 based on 15 critic reviews, reflecting an average reception.
Even with the mixed feedback, MGM+ is moving forward with a second season, signaling confidence in the series’ storytelling and Stephen King’s loyal fan base.
