Steve Toussaint Explains Why Corlys Still Backs Rhaenyra After ‘House of the Dragon’s’ Brutal Finale

‘House of the Dragon‘ has spent three seasons steadily testing the loyalty of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s closest allies, and few characters have paid a steeper price for standing by her than Lord Corlys Velaryon. Once one of Westeros’s wealthiest and most powerful lords, the Sea Snake has watched his castle burn, his fortune dwindle, and his family shattered across the show’s increasingly brutal war between the Blacks and the Greens.

That toll reached a breaking point in the Season 3 finale, when Corlys found himself taken prisoner during the chaotic Battle of Tumbleton after attempting to broker a peaceful resolution with Gwayne Hightower and Daemon Targaryen. That last-ditch effort at compromise ultimately failed, with Daemon flatly rejecting the proposed truce and plunging the battle forward regardless of Corlys’s pleas for restraint.

Given everything Corlys has sacrificed and the growing rift forming between him and Rhaenyra’s inner circle, many fans have wondered whether his loyalty to her cause might finally be wavering. In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley, actor Steve Toussaint addressed exactly that question, explaining that despite the strain, Corlys still believes Rhaenyra could ultimately be persuaded to become a voice for reason, according to ScreenRant.

That belief, according to Toussaint, stems largely from noble rather than purely political motivations. Even after Rhaenyra denied his request to legitimize his sons Alyn and Addam as heirs, and even as the war has grown increasingly costly and futile in his eyes, Corlys appears to be holding onto hope that the queen’s better instincts can still prevail if given the right guidance.

Toussaint has spoken in multiple interviews about how significantly Corlys has evolved across Season 3, tracing much of that change back to the death of his wife, Rhaenys. Speaking with the Official Game of Thrones podcast, he explained that Corlys continues fighting for Rhaenyra partly out of guilt for the years he spent away at sea instead of with his family, and partly because Rhaenys herself insisted Rhaenyra needed their support.

That emotional throughline has shaped Corlys into something closer to a peacemaker than the aggressive naval commander fans first met in Season 1. Speaking with TVLine, Toussaint described Corlys’s arc this season as one defined by genuine exhaustion with war and its futility, pointing to his attempted compromise with Gwayne and Daemon as clear evidence he’s trying to avoid any further shedding of innocent blood.

Despite that continued devotion to Rhaenyra’s cause, Toussaint has also acknowledged that Corlys’s patience is wearing thin. Speaking with Gold Derby earlier in the season, he explained that Corlys has begun questioning whether his years of sacrifice have actually been worth it, wondering if he might be better off distancing himself from Rhaenyra’s circle entirely given how little he feels he’s received in return.

That tension between hope and disillusionment appears set to carry directly into Season 4, which HBO has confirmed as the show’s final chapter. Toussaint has indicated he wants to further explore where Corlys’s loyalty ultimately lands as the story moves toward its conclusion, leaving open the possibility that the Sea Snake’s faith in Rhaenyra could either be vindicated or shattered entirely before the Dance of the Dragons comes to an end.
