Steven Spielberg Wrote a Role Just for Colman Domingo in His Upcoming Movie — ‘I Read the Script and Burst Into Tears’
Steven Spielberg’s next movie is already making waves, and actor Colman Domingo couldn’t be more excited about it.
The film, which doesn’t have a title yet, is set to come out in 2026. It will be an American science fiction story written by David Koepp, based on an original idea from Spielberg himself. Universal Pictures will release it in theaters on June 12, 2026.
The cast is packed with big names, including Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Wyatt Russell, and Colman Domingo. Other actors like Noah Robbins, Chavo Guerrero Jr., Lance Archer, Brian Cage, Gabby Beans, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Michael Gaston, Elliot Villar, Tommy Martinez, and Patricia Conolly are also part of the lineup.
For Domingo, this project is more than just another movie role. He has worked with Spielberg before, appearing as Private Harold Green in Lincoln back in 2012. That role was small but memorable, opening the film with a strong emotional tone. Over a decade later, Spielberg has written a new part just for him.
“I read the script immediately and burst into tears, because I think there is so much humanity in it,” Domingo said in an Esquire interview. “And that’s ultimately the most I can share: it’s about the possibilities of what we can be when we truly make deeper contact and connections with each other.”
Domingo describes Spielberg not just as a director but as a friend and even a brother. The fact that Spielberg personally wrote a role with him in mind shows how far the actor has come since his early days.
Production for the film started on February 26, under the working title Non-View. Shooting took place across several locations, including New Jersey, Atlanta, New York City, and Huntington.
Filming wrapped up in late May. Casting calls were held in different areas, looking for extras to play wrestling fans, diner patrons, hotel guests, and even North Korean soldiers. Some scenes were filmed on the Cape May Seashore Lines railroad and around Jersey City’s McGinley Square neighborhood.
Costume designer Paul Tazewell, who previously worked with Spielberg on West Side Story in 2021, joined the team once again. Longtime Spielberg collaborator John Williams is composing the score, marking his 30th time working with the director.
Talking about his career, Domingo shared that he loves being involved in many things at once. “I’ve never been a person who could just do one thing. My whole career has been that way, and I find that I’m a stronger actor because I direct, a stronger director because I act, a stronger writer because of all of it,” he explained.
He also reflected on his roots, saying that his drive and curiosity might come from his ancestors. “Maybe it’s something that goes back to my ancestors. I’m a descendant of people who were enslaved. How did they survive? They didn’t just fight — they loved, danced, sang. They had lots of s**. They were courageous, curious — and I feel that. We can do it all.”
Spielberg’s upcoming sci-fi movie remains shrouded in mystery, but with such a cast and creative team behind it, anticipation is already high. As for Domingo, this marks another milestone in a career that continues to grow, powered by passion, creativity, and deep human connection.
