Paramount+ recently revealed that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will wrap up after five seasons, surprising many fans with the early announcement well before the show’s third season launch in July.

This raised questions about why they would share this news so far in advance. At the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, the showrunner Akiva Goldsman gave a strong hint that while Strange New Worlds might be ending, it could be setting the stage for a reboot or revival of the original Star Trek series, also known as Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS).

According to TrekMovie, Goldsman said, “Right now [the characters] are in mid-stage development. How do they become who they are? What happens to some of them? Those are questions that we knew we needed to answer and promised to answer. And so that’s our five-year plan. And then we run into TOS. [Switching to conspiratorial tone] But they’re not dying. And we have those sets…”

With Star Trek’s 60th anniversary coming up next year, fans are eager for something big. No new movie is planned for the celebration, and the upcoming Starfleet Academy series expected in 2026, probably won’t be the main event. A reboot or fresh take on the original series, which started it all, would definitely capture attention.

Strange New Worlds already features many familiar TOS characters like Spock, Kirk, Uhura, Scotty, Chapel, and M’Benga. They just need to add a couple more, like Bones and Sulu, since Chekov didn’t appear until later in the original show.

Adding to the excitement is William Shatner, the original Captain Kirk, who recently mentioned that Paramount reached out to him about something Star Trek related. Even though Kirk’s story ended in Star Trek: Generations, Picard season 3 hinted that he might return.

Imagine Shatner playing an older Kirk looking back on his early days as captain while the younger Strange New Worlds cast shows those adventures. That would be a huge moment for the franchise.

The original Star Trek was supposed to cover a five-year mission, but only three seasons were ever made. A reboot or prequel could fill in those missing years, especially since the sets and most characters are already ready to go.

No one knows for sure if this will happen, but it sounds likely. Fans want more seasons of Strange New Worlds, but in today’s streaming world, five seasons is usually the limit. Streaming services prefer launching new shows over extending existing ones because new content attracts more viewers.

If a new take on the classic Star Trek brings more fans to Paramount+ than another season of Strange New Worlds, it’s easy to see why they’d choose that path. Whatever happens, Star Trek fans have plenty to look forward to.
