‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Premiere to Feature “Craziest Cold Open,” Says Creator
tranger Things fans are getting ready for what promises to be the biggest season yet. Ross Duffer, one of the show’s co-creators, recently shared some exciting news about the opening episodes of season 5, the final chapter of the popular series.
He revealed on Instagram that the first two episodes are finished and that the premiere includes their “craziest cold open” ever.
Ross wrote, “Chapters One and Two: locked, mixed, scored, colored, DONE. ‘The Crawl’ is our favorite, most eventful first episode since Season 1. ‘The Vanishing of…’ (yeah yeah you think you know who blah blah) has by far the craziest cold open we’ve ever done. One of the sequences we’re most proud of this season.”
The creators are keeping the plot very secret, but fans have seen episode titles, some images, and a fast-paced teaser trailer. The story picks up a year after season 4, set in 1987, with Eleven and her friends facing their biggest challenge yet. They have to stop Vecna and the spreading darkness from the Upside Down before it destroys Hawkins—and possibly the world.
The military also arrives in Hawkins, complicating things as they start hunting Eleven. The group must stick together for one last battle, just before the fourth anniversary of Will Byers’s disappearance.
Netflix will release the final season, which has eight episodes, in three parts. The first four episodes come out on November 26, 2025. Then, three more episodes drop on December 25, with the finale arriving on December 31.
The cast includes familiar faces like Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and many others. Amybeth McNulty, who appeared last season as a guest, joins the main cast this time. The season also welcomes newcomer Linda Hamilton.
Earlier in 2025, a missing poster for Eleven (under her real name Jane Hopper) was released, building hype for the new episodes. Fans also got new footage during Netflix’s Tudum event on May 31, and the first official poster came out in mid-July.

With the release dates set and excitement growing, it’s clear the Duffer brothers have saved their biggest surprises for last. This final season looks like it will be packed with action, emotion, and some of the wildest moments the show has ever had. Fans will have to wait only a few more months to find out how the story ends.
