Spinoffs built around beloved sitcom side characters rarely take the kind of narrative swing this one just did. Rather than easing fans back into familiar territory with gentle nostalgia, this new series decided to blow up its entire universe within the very first episode.

That series is ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,’ HBO Max’s new ‘Big Bang Theory’ spinoff centered on comic book store owner Stuart Bloom, played once again by Kevin Sussman. The show picks up several years after the original series ended, following Stuart as he continues running his shop and dating his girlfriend Denise, until his quiet life is upended by a device left behind by Sheldon and Leonard.

Stuart accidentally damages that quantum interference device, disrupting the fabric of reality and opening the door to a chaotic multiverse. The premiere opens in a post-apocalyptic version of Pasadena, where Stuart is now bartering supplies like cans of cat food for copies of old Batman comics just to survive, alongside geologist Bert Kibbler and physicist Barry Kripke.

Roughly twelve minutes into the episode, the group is visited by an alternate universe version of Stuart, who explains that this ruined timeline and every other alternate reality can be avoided if Stuart repairs the device properly. That mission sends Stuart, Denise, Bert and Kripke traveling into a different alternate universe, where they unexpectedly reunite with Rajesh Koothrappali, played once again by Kunal Nayyar.

This version of Raj has lived through considerably stranger circumstances than the character fans remember, complete with long hair and years of visible trauma. He also received something the original series never gave him, a genuine happy ending, having married after riding an elephant to his own wedding, only for his bride to be devoured by a giant moth shortly afterward in one of the episode’s darker comedic beats.

Among the group, Raj possesses the astrophysics knowledge needed to understand the device capable of damaging parallel realities. He examines the machine, discovers its calibration is incorrect, and begins the process of properly fixing it, giving the group their best real shot at restoring the original timeline.

That progress is cut short when Barry Kripke shoots and kills Raj before he can finish the repair. In this ruined version of reality, Kripke has become a ruler, controlling Caltech and commanding armed followers, enjoying a level of authority he never possessed in the original sitcom timeline. Fixing the device would erase that power entirely and return him to an ordinary life where his old rivals routinely outshined him.

Series creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady explained the show’s broader structural approach in an interview with Deadline, describing how each episode ends with the group landing somewhere seemingly safe before that safety immediately unravels. Prady summed up the pattern simply, noting that establishing everything is fine only to reveal it is not became something they kept returning to throughout the season.

That format gives ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ the rhythm of an ongoing comic book series, dropping the same core group of characters into a new alternate reality concept each week. Some of those realities lean into more outlandish premises, while others explore darker emotional territory, with familiar faces from ‘The Big Bang Theory’ popping up along the way in ways the show has kept deliberately under wraps.

With Raj’s death setting an unexpectedly grim tone for what many expected to be a lighter nostalgia trip, the series has made clear early on that it has no interest in playing things safe. Whether HBO Max renews the show for a second season will likely depend heavily on how audiences respond to this bold opening chapter.
