‘Sugar’ Fans Are Still Processing the Finale, and Colin Farrell Has Answers

The second season of Apple TV+’s Sugar ended with one of the biggest twists the series has delivered so far. The finale finally gave John Sugar the reunion he had been waiting for, but it quickly turned into something very different from what he expected. Instead of finding the sister he remembered, Sugar discovered that Djen had changed in ways he never imagined.

According to TV Insider, the season finale revealed that Djen had survived after disappearing years earlier. While Sugar believed she was dead, the truth was much more complicated. During her time away, Djen ignored the rules that their alien race was supposed to follow. She secretly developed technology capable of controlling Earth’s weather and teamed up with a powerful group of humans. At the same time, many members of their race chose to leave Earth and return to their home planet, while Sugar stayed behind to continue searching for his sister.

Speaking to TV Insider, Colin Farrell explained how difficult that discovery is for Sugar. “Finding out that his sister, not only is she still alive, which is beautiful, and there’s a sense of release, a relief with that, but then finding out that she’s not who he remembers her to be and there’s been some change that he can’t quantify or fully understand, it’s a lot.”

The reunion takes place during an exclusive event attended by wealthy and influential guests. Charlotte, played by Laura Donnelly, secretly arranges the meeting. However, Sugar soon realizes that Charlotte has been working with Djen all along. After Sugar refuses to support Djen’s plans, Charlotte knocks him unconscious by blowing cinnamon into his face, a substance that acts as a weakness for their alien species.

Donnelly spoke about filming the emotional moment during her interview with TV Insider. “I think it might’ve been powdered chocolate, but I had to do it a few times. It was at the very end of a very, very long night shoot.” She also explained how Charlotte feels about betraying Sugar. “It’s really devastating for Charlotte because she is aware of just what level of betrayal this is, and yet she doesn’t mean it that way. This relationship was real for her.”

Before Sugar loses consciousness, Djen quietly tells him, “It’s not for them, it’s for us.” Actress Mireille Enos shared her own thoughts about what that line means. “I think she’s imagining this space, this planet, as kind of a wonderful second home for her race. Potentially. She loves her little brother, but I think her own ambition is number one on her priorities.”

By the time Sugar wakes up, everyone has disappeared. Once again, he finds himself completely alone. Still, Farrell believes the story is far from over. During his interview with TV Insider, he suggested that Sugar would not simply walk away after learning the truth about Djen.

“I don’t know how long he can sit on knowing that she’s here on planet Earth and not try to sit down with her again and find out exactly what she’s doing and why she’s doing it. He has very daunting suspicions as to what her intention may be now that she can wield this powerful technology.”

The finale ends with Sugar returning to his normal life alongside his dog, Wiley, as he prepares to move forward. However, the final moments tease that another mystery is already beginning when his alien communication device suddenly receives an incoming signal after he has left the room.

That final tease leaves the door wide open for another season. While Apple TV+ has not officially announced Season 3, the ending makes it clear there is still much more of Sugar’s story left to tell, especially now that Djen’s true plans have finally been revealed.
