After Superman, the next big member of the Super-Family is finally getting her own solo movie. Supergirl first appeared in the DC Universe (DCU) during the closing moments of the Superman film, but now she’s stepping into her own spotlight.

The new Supergirl movie is directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira. Milly Alcock plays Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. The cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham. According to DC Studios, the story will follow Supergirl traveling across the galaxy on a violent quest for revenge, inspired by the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Fans got an early glimpse of the film when the first official image from the Supergirl set was released. The photo shows the official clapboard and the logo, giving viewers a peek at the movie’s production.

Supergirl’s solo project has been in the works for years. The character first appeared in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) back in The Flash (2023), played by Sasha Calle. Plans for a standalone movie changed when James Gunn and Peter Safran became co-CEOs of DC Studios in October 2022.

In January 2023, DC officially announced the new film as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, based on the 2021–22 comic miniseries by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Ana Nogueira joined as the screenwriter in November 2023, and Milly Alcock was cast in January 2024. Craig Gillespie came on board as director in May 2024.

Filming began on January 13, 2025, at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and in London, England. Rob Hardy returned as the cinematographer. Later that week, David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham joined the cast as Supergirl’s parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze. James Gunn mostly stayed off set during filming, saying Gillespie had “just been doing his thing” and calling him a great partner.

By the end of February, Gunn and Safran confirmed that filming was halfway done. Jason Momoa and David Krumholtz wrapped their scenes in April, while filming continued in Scotland until May 10. Additional scenes were planned in Iceland.

The film explores how Kara Zor-El is more jaded than her cousin Clark Kent because she grew up on a piece of Krypton after her planet was destroyed. Producer James Gunn described her as a “pixie-ish, but very attitudinal character.” Matthias Schoenaerts plays Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley is Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young girl Supergirl meets on her journey, and Alcock’s parents are played by Emily Beecham and David Krumholtz. The movie also features Supergirl’s dog Krypto and a cameo from Jason Momoa as Lobo, an alien bounty hunter.

Warner Bros. Pictures plans to release Supergirl in the United States on June 26, 2026. It will be part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
