James Gunn’s new Superman movie just hit theaters this Friday, and people everywhere are still talking about it. The most famous Kryptonian finally made his big live-action debut as part of the new DC Universe, and his cousin, Supergirl, will be joining the action soon, well, by “soon,” we mean next year. Milly Alcock is set to star in her own Supergirl movie.

Actually, Alcock has already made a brief appearance as Supergirl, but I can’t share any details because of spoilers from the Superman movie.

Recently, the studio released the first official photo of Alcock fully dressed as Supergirl, and fans are really impressed. The costume looks very similar in style to the one worn by David Corenswet, who plays Superman, especially with the matching crest and colors. It also stays true to the comics that inspired the film, Supergirl is rocking the classic skirt look.

Supergirl will be the second movie in the DC Universe, coming right after Superman. Craig Gillespie is directing, and Ana Nogueira wrote the script. Milly Alcock plays Kara Zor-El, and the story is based on the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.

James Gunn officially announced the film back in January 2023 when he and Peter Safran introduced the DC Universe’s first chapter, called Gods and Monsters. Gunn described the movie as “a big science fiction epic” and said it would show a tougher, more serious version of Supergirl than we’ve seen before.

Gunn also mentioned that he had thought of Alcock for the role over a year before she was officially cast. She was chosen in January 2024 after doing screen tests on the Superman movie set, where she also appeared in a small cameo, giving fans a sneak peek at her version of the character.

Filming for Supergirl took place between January and May 2025, mostly in England and Scotland. Alongside Alcock, the movie stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham. Jason Momoa will also make a cameo appearance as Lobo, an alien bounty hunter. The film was originally going to be called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but the subtitle was dropped by June 2025.

The movie is set to be released in theaters on June 26, 2026, and it will be part of the DC Universe’s opening chapter.
